Hello I have been having issues with my zoas lately. I am fairly new to this hobby but I have some experience just need some help. I came home from class and noticed a few of my zoas looked like this -

the polyp on the right side is acting funny and I noticed a couple other zoas on different frags were doing this also

Could it be getting 2 much light? I have lighh powered led's but I have them only on 10% which is high because the light is strong but maybe im not giving them enough light I dont know.

I call that "umbrella syndrome". People have other names for it.
Could be so many things, including too little light.
If you have them under only 10% I would increase slowly and see what happens.
But again, that is assuming that the system is in a good shape for zoas, besides the light being only at 10%.
You also need to understand about spectrum and so on...
There is lot to it!
Please do a search to learn more about zoas' water params, flow, temp, nutrition, etc...

They seem to be fine today I actually see a new head growing on it. Im not sure if its the light or now but im going to slowly increase it over time. thanks!

y palys do this from time to time. i thought it was a light issue as well. now, though i believe i will likely move them a little higher, i believe they are ridding themselves of sediments \ sand. i say this because the umbrella behavior had me concerned and no growth for a little while had me doubly concerned. but now i can count 6 new polyps in the last couple weeeks while still displaying this behavior.

my 2 cents\experience

Yes, they tend to do that from time to time, but when that happens it's only a polyp at a time per colony. Some call the "cleaning process". But when that happens like in the picture, both at the same time, I would guess on lighting or flow. Could be low flow too, or both.

thanks grandis, good to know....and it makes sense...mine do only do that one at a time.

sorry i wasnt help.

No need be sorry. We're all here to share and learn!
I learn even time I come here. :D

The polyps could look like that also sometimes when the are target fed, looking "fat".

I target fed them mysis shrimp. Maybe thats the reason why. Also I target fed everything in my tank mysis shrimp 2 days ago and a couple polyps on some of my frags still have not opened yet. Its so frustrating sometimes when they don't open up but patience is key in this hobby I guess.

Bingo!
:D

I normally recommend to feed them once or twice a week max, but small quantities. If you fed mysis once a week is more than enough.

I have a huge problem.

I purchased a frag of 4 polyps for 9$ from my LFS. I have had these polyps for about 7 days. When I first put them into the tank they looked awesome. They opened up quickly and adapted to the light very well. A couple days later I noticed they were getting longer and more open. About the 5th day I had them they were almost 3 times as long then when I originally purchased them. At first when I saw them doing this I thought they loved the led's. Then when I came home and saw they didn't look normal because of how high they were stretching.

on the reciprocal, polyps that are squatted and not extended fully, with slightly closed skirts, would you say are getting too much light

I dont think it was to much light. I think the light either shocked them into defensive mode and they have been closed for more than 5 days now. Right when I first put them in the tank I remember they were fully open and looking good. but after a few days they stretched themselves 4x the size then shriveled up and are closed.

In My experience when zoas/paly don't receive enough light they stretch unnaturally long.

For instance I had a few plugs fall behind the Rack in my frag tank and looking under at them they were totally stretched out and lost almost all color. I have no idea how long they were back there but they were very long.. Only thing missing in that spot was light fwiw . Put them back up into the light and they are recovering..
