Zoanthid experiment

and yeah, if God did not want us to eat animals, they wouldnt be so delicious.

Once again, I have no issues with people eating meat. But you should realize that by your argument, god might also intend us to be cannibals. I have heard that human flesh tastes good; plenty of marbled fat and nice red meat. In other words, don't pretend that your meat consumption is ordained by a deity. You like meat. That's all. We all like aquariums. That's all. Both harm animals unnecessarily (unless we are starving and have nothing to eat but animals). No matter what side of things your opinion on these issues fall, it is undeniable that, with few exceptions, both eating meat and keeping aquaria shorten animals lifespans for our enjoyment.

There aren't enough veggies in the world to sustain a population of non meat eaters. Besides; if you love animals so much, stop eating their food ;)

If you have been around long enough then you would know personally or read about someone who should have given up on a zoa but didn't and somehow it recovered.

Examples include being thrown in the trash, being exposed to air for extended periods of time, and severe temperature shifts.

As mentioned above what if it had been a pest and someone threw it into a bucket and left it in his garage for a month and upon returning it to the tank made a full recovery?

Would you be upset?

FYI that is exactly what someone did on here and the only thing happened was people were surprised.

until just a few short years ago, people were still eating eachother, namely in New Guinea. i may also point out that the book of Revelation speaks of devouring the enemies of the Lord after armageddon. so, if it were socially aceptable, cannibalism wouldnt be off the table so to speak. Personally, i dont care much for spiral ham, but dog is delicious. bacon is fantastic and gator tastes like chicken. Giant clam ans scallops are two more favorites for me.but yes, we all like aquariums and the inhabitants we keep. but if i were in a plane crash in the andes or rockies i'd probably eat you so i wouldnt die. eat or be eaten.

I thought it was an interesting experiment. Also, whenever I spray my ATS off, its basically mass pod genocide. I think it was interesting that it actually bounced back after thawing and then died. I wonder what caused that to happen.

Reefwars accomplished his goal. He gives a rip about how a zoa reacts to heat or cold. He could care less about learning about how a zoa reacts to movement in shipping or if a heat pack is good or bad. He's a baiter, just like Al and the Reverrraaannd Jackson. No he's not a race baiter, he's a master baiter... He enjoys ruffling feathers and then comes back and talks like he knows something more than us. Blah blah blah preacher man... I really don't care what killers we are and how hypocritical we are.. It's a hobby. It's no different then putting flea control on our pets genius... Oh we should not be such hypocrits.... We love our dog and kill the flea.... Take a break man... I 'm sure this post is too much for this site...

This thread is exactly the same as the Microwaving Zoa thread from a couple years ago. I have a feeling its going to end the same way as well, closed and removed.

Microwaving zoas is a horrible idea. It was probably removed for the simple fact that it COULD kill you.

What is more surprising to me is the amount of response to it. LOL!!
I wish I had that much when I post some of my threads... :D

Grandis.

Really? Don't see it and I don't see it from any of Reefwars posts. Very rude to jump on Reefwars.

This thread has it all - religion, politics, eating other people, hyperbole, and maybe a little bit of info.

TBH, the threshold for coral is something most of us are probably curious about. My tank got down to the upper 50's recently and I didn't lose any zoas. I'm not going to freeze them to see how much lower they would go, but I would say that means we could ship them during many months of the year without a heat pack.

Hey Reefwars, I have an idea for an experiment that could help with shipping if it worked out. Put a polyp in saran wrap, and fold it so that the polyp is sealed in without air or water. Let in sit out at room temp for 1-2 days and see if it will then stay alive after being reintroduced into your tank. Then if that works you can try it for real by mailing one to MS to me in an envelope!

Some people on this thread need to relax and go eat some bacon(then you can come back happier and apologize). This experiment was done with hope that the polyp would survive while knowing that if it did die, the coral is not conscious to the act; these animals do not have the capacity to process pain or emotion. Even if this experiment was done purely to fulfill Reefwars' curiosity, is it less worse to fill a glass box up with animals with the chance of killing many in the attempt to fulfill your own curiosity for the hobby? I personally don't see anything wrong with either.

haha ok well figured id post

so if i got this right its ok to spray boiling water on aiptasia, zap them with a laser, cover them in glue...epoxy...kalk

how about crabs? so we can stab them ijn their hole flush them with soda or simply bait them out with food just to flush them down a toilet correct?

how about pods? are they not allowed life too? so we kill countless numbers every hour

its ok to get rid of a nudi whos done nothing but eat its required diet but yet not for a polyp?

you people do more if not much harsher " experiments " the only difference is ypou mask it with a stupid excuse like" well they were stinging my coral"

please.....how hypocritical

tell you what , if someone explains why its ok to do all the above and in fact recommended as the go to approaches for such things but its not ok to do an experiment on a single polyp ....that ive propogated in the thousands!! and grew from scratch lol id lovce to hear it.

any more room up there ?

lol

anyways my experiment wasnt for fun, it was to answer the question that cold temperatures arnt as harsh on zoanthids as you may believe. it actually started on the topic of a three day shipping trip for zoas which ive done many times , some one made the comment that they couldnt survive with no heat pak at all and then i commented that hell they could be frozen and still survive........ i was sort of right:)

i was wrong they wont survive long term from being frozen but its also not an immediate death sentance either as the polyp did infact survive the thaw and had responses.i do believe that i could bring it back if i interfered but i let it heal naturally and it needed help healing.

still though i find the topic interesting on how its ok to outright kill and demolish marine animals if they are invading something more pretty than it is but not allowed to experiment on a single polyp who has no brain or awareness of its surrounding.

its also ok to cut them with a blade, wet saw, intentionally place them with predators or simply sump them once your bored of them

zoas can be pests to did you know that ?

yeah its true believe it or not alot of reefers look for ways to remove them , not once thinking about doing it in a lively manner , most care only about saving what they WANT to keep lol

so please i love a good preaching but id love to hear the answers you have on this or i guess i already do

lol

anyways debate on folks experiment is done and thats that :)

the last question i have before i jet is .......

out of all of you , approve or dissaprove......

who has not intentially killed one of the above?

truthfully..

i bet theres a very few , and if it wasnt one of the above you probably killed a fish, sponge,shrimp....

theres always going to be a debate but ill give you some reality on the world... how do you think we found out boiling water kills polyps? fluke tabs clove polyps? kalk to anemones? ro/di water for nudis and bayer(?) for pests?

its simple

you did it!!!

First Ill admit I didnt read much after this post, so if this was already counter-argued...my bad.

Second: There is a huge difference in killing off aptasia/flat worms/harmful hitch hikers and killing a zoa polyp for no reason than your bored. The big difference being that if we left those other nuisance animals alone they would injure and/or kill other animals. If you dont kill your zoa through these "experiments" they arent going to go on and kill any other animals in your tank, let alone sting them.

For me that is enough difference alone in deciding whether or not to remove or kill a certain animal, For others it is not enough and that is their right to have that opinion and follow through on that opinion in a legal way. I just wanted to step in and say that was a bad comparison. Like saying not to kill animal A because its an animal even though leaving it alone will allow it to kill off an entire population of Animal B.

Side Note: I have never killed anything in my tank except algae. Never had flat works, never klilled aptasia(peppermints take care of that), never had a bad hitch hiker that I couldnt allow to live in the fuge instead of the DT, and yes I know how lucky I am for this.

In the end these are my opinions and should be taken as such.

To play devils advocate, by keeping an aquarium weather you deliberately killed anything in your tank or not you are responsible for the death of hundreds if not thousands of living creatures just by going through the natural cycling process.

I see nothing wrong here... how many times have u frag z\p's and cut a couple in half, and they die? All fir personal gain at that? We take there aminals and strip them of there world and put them in ours. All for a hobby and personal gain. But yet ppl wanna get mad because somesone wants to educate himself. But yet ppl praise some who tries to graft to polyps together. U have no problem with. Rasing copper levels or lowering salt levels to the verge of death. But u wanna scream about one polyp. All of us have lost more polyp for no reason, atleast he losing one for a reason to learn something
