Zoanthids 30 Gallon Zoanthid Only Tank

Hello reef central!!

So last week my 30 gallon custom built tank got done cycling! I was eager to get started so today I made the short trip to my LFS and spent way to much $$. No regrets tho!! As long as the girlfriend does not find out how much I spent. :)

A bit of background info:

I'm a full time student studying renewable energy electronic systems. I spend all my free time looking at my reef tank, or at my LFS talking to the owner about anything and everything. I have only been in the hobby for about 7 months now but I have learned so much in this short time!

This is my second tank, but my first zoanthid only tank. My first tank was a 12g nano cube that I had set up for about 6 months and ran out of space. In May I decided I was going to upgrade and have a zoanthid only tank. The LFS owner is a really nice guy and gave me enough store credit on my 12g set-up that I only had to pay $250 out of pocket for my current custom tank and stand.

I live only like 1 mile from my LFS so I will be spending to much money there, and be adding zoanthids every time they get in a shipment.

I will be adding pictures later tonight of some to the zoanthids I picked up. I'm not very good with names so once I post pictures if you know the name please tell me.

Thanks everyone!!

Welcome.....as a new member here I can tell you you picked a great place. Everyone I have come into contact with extremely helpful and inviting. As a zoa lover too I can't wait to see your tank :)

I'll be posting pictures tonight. It's only had coral in it for like.... A few hours :)

So it's not that amazing... YET!! Give me 6 months and you will be blown away :)

Tank footprint is 36"L x 24"W x 9"H
So it's a sweet little tank.

When I was designing what size tank I wanted I decided to would rather have length and width then height. I was restricted to 30 gallon because when I go to grad school they have restrictions on tank size. Max of 30 gallon, and they don't have to know about the 30 gallon sump!!! SHHH

Zoanthids are addicting but and this is a huge but...learn to grow them and frag them and all the money you spend at your LFS will be recycled ha I frag out of my apartment and I basically pay nothing for my reef tank.

Yea I see what you mean!! I may or may not have spent like $450 today on just zoanthids... :)

Maybe once they grow out I can frag them and make some of the money back. But we all know that once I do that I can justify spending even more money on my addiction!!

Look into local reef clubs too. You can get corals much cheaper off forum members because they don't have any overhead to pay for like an LFS I.E. store rent. For example LFS by me sell Sunny D's for $30 per polyp but I got 3 for $20 of a local reefer.

Today I purchased 5 polyps of Sunny D's for my LFS for $25. Guess I got a good deal? :)

I think that's pretty. Good there might be price differences between our areas as well. Ik here Candy Apple reds are around $20pp I've seen captain Americas up to $25pp and a store by me even has some at over $100pp. Pretty crazy IMO.

Yea I understand what your saying. I think a lot of it has to do with the location of this store. It's in a small town and kinda back in the woods, the first time I went there it seemed kinda shady. But now I don't go anywhere else cus there selection is amazing compared to any other store within 50 miles.

I can't wait to grow out some of these zoanthids so I can start to trade them!! :)

They can grow surprisingly quick. I get amazed every time I look at q colony its got new buds

Well maybe we can trade some stuff one day soon :)

I'll be posting pictures latter tonight of my tank and some of the zoanthids I got.

I'm going to start another thread to see if people can help me ID some of them with there proper names so that when I wanna start trading I can tell everyone what I have.

Just got some pictures taken. They are not the best in the world but hope they will do!
