Zoanthids hurtin after new light

Hey all..
Ok so I just got a new light for my tank.. basically went from like 40 watts to 234watts..

My Zoanthids were really nice on the weekend, they looked not too bad monday, and yesterday I left the daylights on way too long I think.. like 11 hours or so.. I notice that they didnt look too good when coming home last night.. today there not soo bad cause the day lights have only been on for about 4 hours.. They are not closed, but there tentacled look thin and shriveld up. I realise I did not correctly acclimate the lighting but it is about 9 inchs off the water.. anyone have an idea? I shocked them?

Thanks

Sounds like you shocked them. I recently did the same thing, going from 72W PC to 150W MH.

Try moving them lower in the tank, and more to the edge where there is less light. As they get used to the stronger lights you can move them in and up.

In order to give them some relief, you should go to hardware store and get some window screen. Cut it into a few layers and place the layers between your light and the tank. As the corals start to rebound start removing a layer periodically to acclimate them to the light.

Also, have you established a regualr lighting schedule? You mentioned you left your lights on way too long? Probaly buying a timer would not hurt either so you can get everything in the tank on a schedule.

Yeah I figured that I shocked them... they do look better today, and I've had the daylights on only for about 5 hours for now.. I can try to move them down however they are part of a rock I bought that looks real good where it is.. plus there are mushrooms on the rock so I would have to lay it on the sand.. The screen thing is kind of interesting, and yes I do need to get a timer.. I used to have one but it is not good for this light.. plus this fixture has 2 power sources so I need to get a bigger better timer that will hold at least 2 at a time. I have seen some pretty nice ones from Coralife I think, and ideally i could hook up a power head on the timer as well.. A little pricey though so will have to wait until next pay.. lol.

Anyways, thanks alot for your input guys. Much appreciated.

What kind was the old light and what kind is the new? Please keep in mind that if you went from say PC to MH you have increased the intensity of the light as well as the wattage. So, in some cases, you need to block the corals (under overhangs etc) as well as limit the length of time the light is on.

Had a crappy T8 daylight, and T8 Actinic.
Now I have the Nova Extreme Pro.. 6 T5 39W each..
3 10,000K
3 460nm actinics

definitely light shock. i would recommend putting some eggcrate over the tank, a couple layers and then slowly removing them one layer at a time, i layer per week for 3-4 weeks and they should acclimate just fine. or just leave them on the bottom of the tankand slowly moving them up to where ever you want to place them.

Ok so my my polyps are still not doing good.. they are actually button polyps.
They are always closed tight now.. I have moved them down to the bottom and left side of the tank.. I have had my lights for at least 2 months now and they just wont open.. my nitrates are at 0. they are not in heavy flow. There was a huge aiptasia close to them.. trying to kill it.

Should I try and direct feed them? Don't know what to do anymore.. they should be used to the lighting by now.
The calcium is around 450ppm.. The ph and temp are pretty stable.. everything else is doing fine.. My SG is kinda high 1.027-1.028 but stable. I do use a normal hydrometer so perhaps, the SG is even higher? There usually a bit slimy, so they are not happy campers

The fact they are not dead already is good. You seem to have done all that I can think of. It will take time for them to come back around.

Same thing is going on with some i bought online, been three days. they are under 2 250w MH's all the way in the bottom corner with some xenia thats not happy either. I'm just takein it slow hope they come out so i can see them for the first time. All the other zoa's i have are doing awesome.

I am going thru the same thing. My xenia are hating it but everything else is loving it....maybe I'll put some screen over their section of the tank.

i just did this when i switched to new bulbs on a 8 bulb t5 and it worked great so far havent lost anything i started with 3 layers down to last one

you can buy a couple feet of window screen ( fiber glass ) and cut to fit to drape over the tanks surface under the lights. You can place a couple layers of this, this would displace the light going onto the tank. every week you can take a layer off. this would give your corals time to get acclimated to the newer stronger lighting. Consider it being light shocked.

example getting stuck in a dimly lit room for months to years then all the sudden, someone turns a switch and the whole room is now lit by stadium lights.
