Zoanthids

Anyone know a good place to buy these online.

I tried LFS but are super expensive and no one seems to have them locally.

Figured this is a good time since the weather is nice.

Thanks.

Dr. Mac's is good. I would be careful about the online places that sell colonies as they are loaded with bad critters since they are chipped off the reef and sent to you. Buy frags...

What do you mean by bad critters?

I don't care if they are frags or colonies really. Frags would be just fine.

How fast do they grow?

Did you mean the pacific east aqua culture, they're very expensive

Coral fanatics is cool site, you guys have any experience with them?

Bad critters on zoas would usually be zoa eating nudis and spiders... but there are a lot of other coral pests out there.

Sea Spiders

You should be dipping and QTing wherever you get stuff from, but newly harvested wild colonies are going to be much more likely to have such pests and most companies selling full colonies are not doing any kind of treatment on them. A lot of companies selling frags are doing proactive treatments and may actually be QTing as well (you can always ask about their practices) because they are generally selling premium corals and need to uphold their reputations. Land based culturing operations similarly have to control pests since they rely on coral growth to do business. It's still safest to do your own treatments before putting in your tank (even when you are getting stuff from other hobbyists), but there are ways to significantly reduce the chances of getting coral pests before you even get them in your hand (mainly by dealing with reputable companies and hobbyists who have healthy tanks and who themselves follow good pest control practices).

With the number of new members we've got right now, this might be a good topic for a meeting... :)

As a new member about to start adding corals I say +1 to this :)

Since I've dealt with zoo nudis twice, I can tell you that is one thing you don't want to mess with. IF you can prevent it, do it!!! The growth of each individual zoa depends on itself. I have some that grows really fast and some grows really slow. I have come to find out that the ones that feeds grows faster then the ones that don't feed. What I mean by feeding is by catching food while it flows by. They close down themselves to feed....

Brian said it all. Plus, dipping is unlikely to fully get a colony rock. The rock is just too porous and too many places where the dip won't get, or get well enough. Again, this is just from my experience, and you are welcome to take the risk. I certainly did, and spent more trying to get rid of pests than on the corals themselves. Dr Mac is expensive, but nudis eating everything in your tank is expensive too.

Mike, that wrasse has really kept the nudi population down. I have a case of the pox now though. I just can't win.

It would suck to get one of those in the tank. Is there anything you can use to get them out of the rock without hurting the Zoanthids.

I was thinking about ordering these. Do you guys see any potential problems with these on the rocks?

FWIW, there's got to be at least 20 members with green bird's nest (nice looking hearty SPS that grows pretty well...great choice in my opinion) so I would look for that locally for sure. I cut down my colony pretty hardcore when I moved and my tank has had to do some settling in since then, so I don't really have a big enough piece to frag again, but I know I sold a lot of frags throughout the club over the past year.

Really wow, that should fit its a standard usb cord. I'll look into it.

There is only 29" inch space so the skimmer wont fit or i wouldve bought it.

Thanks for the great deal on the corals. U know that crab i was talking about here is the picture

I went to check back on the corals after the lights were off to see how they were doing and the pink Zonathids were on the sand instead if the rock where i placed it so i took a closer look. I saw this dam crab clipping the polyps off, he got about 5 of them before i got to it.

I quickly grabbed a plastic tong and tried to crush him but i think he got away because i did not see any remains. I moved the coral, i'll try to catch him in the morning.

Im gona stay up late tonight and see if he'll show up, i might have to move the corals into the sump

Doesnt he look like the devil lol one mean son of a bich

Im scared for my fish too, i have a beautiful Anthia and Green mandarin that rest at night
