Zoas and LED

I personally prefer T5s and metal halides instead LEDs, but...

Yes, many claim they're having great success with LEDs.
I hope they show up to share their experiences.

I have a great "economy LED' fixture over my 10 gallon reef tank. Most of the inhabitants are zoanthid colonies. They're doing fantastic!

I have a 30 gallon cube (24x18x18") mixed reef with mostly zoantharians and corallimorphs in it with a 21-watt DIY LED fixture, growth is meh, since the lights are not strong enough but the colors are great. :)

I'm running 3 kessil 350w and wanted to know if others are having good success with their zoas under the LEDs?

i have two kessil 350w's on my 120 and my zoas are popping with color, but i havent seen much growth.. i had the kessils for a month and they are 10" above waterline and zoas in mid, bottom of tank. 24" height tank.

Just curious. My LED are really close to the water. 24" deep tank. The zoas do decent but some grow more than others so I just want to hear how others are Doing.

You're not going to have great spread, or enough light per coral; what you lose on spread with the standard angle lens you lose in intensity with the wide. Cornbread uses some LEDs i believe (not 100%) and his zoas and corals are premium grade.

Run kessil 350 on mine and most of my zoas have doubled in size in 6 months have also lost a few that melted away but overall great results..

Hi sorry I'm late :D. These are some of mine I have under AI Vegas and SOLs

Better late than never! :bounce3:

I would like to hear from all of you about your systems, please.
Let us know what's going on there and how long have you been with LEDs.
The more info the better.
What lights did you have before the LEDs? For how long?

The info you guys exchange will help others with LEDs.
Not everyone is lucky with the LEDs. It's kinda hit and miss.

Why do you think your LEDs are better than Metal Halides or T5s, besides the savings on the electricity bill?

This is for all of you, so we can have the info here to others.
I've heard many people saying they are going back to the T5s and/or MHs 'cause there is no comparison. They say the growth after a while is reduced and they can't figure out why.

The pictures are great! Yeah, keep them coming if you want...

We can make this a great thread with info, not only images.
Thanks!

My tank has been running a DIY Led set-up (3:1- RB:CW) for the past year and a half. Although some of my zoas / palys have done okay under them, I would not say they all thrive. As a matter of fact, some don't like them at all and have had to be move to other tanks. Could it be something about that tank? Sure...but my sps/lps seem to thrive under the same lights.

Just an observation. I run one tank with LEDs, one with T5s, and one with MH with Led supplemental lights. Although the tank with MHs has only had that light set-up for 2 1/2 months, the MH tank does seem to look much better.

So having experiences with all 3 types of light fixtures you prefer the MH and T5s over the LEDs, right? You're not alone! :D

Many people have the same observations. They survive but don't thrive and they don't show that strong growth and spread as they do with the T5s and MHs.

Part of it is because of the straight light coming from above and not the wide illumination some good MH fixtures have, and of course the T5 too.
Natural sun light has a spread wide range and MHs / T5 systems are better resembling that particular quality.

There are many different set ups and LED fixtures. That's why some do better than others. but it is very hard to find someone that says his/her LED is actually better than MH and/or HOT5s. Even with thos enice lenses. That's the truth for now.

Hopefully people will keep posting. This is an interesting subject.
Who doesn't want to pay less for electricity?

I have LED's and love them! Being that there are so many brands of LED's and it's fairly new technology in some aspects I would not say they are better than halides. However huge huge advantages are efficiency. Also halides give off tremendous heat from what I've seen. Personally I do like the coloration under LED's and the modularity. But I can't say I'm fully sold for one BIG reason. There is no proof of long term success with LED's. All this being said I'm more than willing to chance it. The efficiency of LED's and the coloration of my corals is enough to keep me on LED's for now.
