Zoas on Frag Plugs

Total newbie question here .. I just got some zoas attached to ceramic frag plugs. How do I go about putting these in my tank? Should I wedge the plugs into the rock (snails might knock them off) and let the zoas overgrow them, or pry the zoas off the plugs and glue them right to the rock? Or should I glue the plugs into the rocks? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Either of those methods would work! Do whichever you prefer.

If this is a fresh frag I would probably put the whole plug in there for a couple weeks no matter which method you wanna do. Then if you want to glue the zoos directly to your rock, scrape them off the plug with a razor. Scrape deep so you get a thin layer of rock/cement up with it so the zoas are still attached and so you don't have to apply super glue directly to them.

This will save them a whole lotta stress.

If you want to securly place the zoas onto the live rock, you can try glueing them with "Super Glue GEL" or you can use "Aquamend" epoxy/putty. You can pick these up at your local HD. "Super Glue GEL" can be messy if you try it underwater, but its probably the quickest with regards to time. The epoxy you would have to mix first and at times it can be troublesome to stick, but you'll get the hang of it.

I wouldn't pry the zoas off the plugs unless you are experienced at doing so. With the stress from transportation and/or acclaimation you'd be chancing it. You can try prying it out later once the zoas have been established to your tank and show some signs of it being healthy, i.e. growth and polyp extension. Good luck and hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick info guys .. I'll let them be for a couple weeks before I start trying to find them a home in my tank. That also gives me time to figure out exactly where I want them. :)

If its a ceramic plug, you can most likely just snip the post off, and glue the remaining disc to a rock if you want. The zoos will overgrow the plug and just begin attaching to the surrounding rock. The ceramic plug shafts snip off pretty easy with a side cut pliers. :)
