zoas + sps

Anyone know if zoas ( alot af them ) can reduce or even stop sps growth. I don't mean by growing on them, but but more like chemical warfare?
 
What about the other way around? Why exactly do zoas not do well in some sps dominant systems like mine. I don't buy the whole "water's too clean" myth because the ocean is even cleaner and zoas seem to do just fine there.
 
The areas where you find a huge matts of zoas is not necessarily right next to acropora colonies like we see in our tanks.

I don't believe that the two have any chemical impact on each other.

The reason I ask, is that in a friend's tank where all parameters are good, his sps corals have hardly grown at all the past year. lps are doing ok. zoas however have been growing like a veed. the lack of growth has been a mistery too all the experienced reefers around here

If his zoas and Lps look good but SPS not growing, I would lean towards excess nutrients like high phosphates. High phosphates can reduce calcification and growth rate of SPS
