Zoo Dip

What's the process for acclimating and using the dip on new arrivals? Should I acclimate them to my tank water via drip method and then dip them and then acclimate them again or should I just take them out of the bag put them in the dip solution then acclimate them to my tank? I'm getting about 15 frags tommorrow and I want to make sure I do this right. Thanks.

From the bag, to the dip and to your tank, providing you have good parameters across the board. If the bag water is very cold, warm the bag by floating in your tank or the dipping brew. The zoos should be near 78 degrees before going into the dip or your tank. From the dip to your tank and you're good to go.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread mucho reef!!! I used it to dip my new zoos last night, everything went perfect. I didn't use any iodine, as all i have is Kent's Tech-D but i'm sure it would have sufficed. I acclimated them to my tank water for a hour or so, moved them to the RO and FWE for around 4 min. I saw all sorts of stuff coming out of the rock they are attached to, 2 bristle worms, a couple copepods and what looked very much like an isopod. If it was, then you saved me from a lot of grief!!! I put the zoos in my tank about 10 min before lights out and this morning they were all open and happy, no side effects whatsoever.

I noticed my zoo's not quite opening on the one of the two colony's. I did as suggested and dipped. A few came off in the dip. I see the curly egg strands.. But can't quite get them off the zoo's themselves? It's really hard to grab them without damage to the zoo itself? should I just cut thim from the colony? Any tips?

Regarding this sentence, "A few came off in the dip", are you saying a few poylps came off during the dip or a few Nudis came off?

I think the objective should be to save as many as possibe. I wouldn't cut them off, just purchase a pair of cheap pointed tweezers or the flat tip angled ones. You know, the kind that come with a toe nail kit or something. Use the pointed tips to remove the egg sacks which are very sticky and won't dislodge when swooshing the rock.

Good luck

I was speaking of the nudi's . Lots of little ones and a few large ones came off. I worked on the eggs but put the colony back in the tank. I will try another dip in a few days and work to remove the eggs. After reading your post I noticed the signs of these pests. Great thread you saved my zoo's.

I used this dip on about 20 frags that I received this weekend and everything turned out great and almost all the zoo's opened an hour or two after doing the dip.

I love Reef Central and Mucho Reef!! I hve 4 colonies of Zoo's looking sad so I went here looking for answers and came upon this thred. I did the tip this morning and Holy Cow. There must've been hundreds of those nasty creatures in my Zoos. I peeled off as many egg saks as I could find and will now continue to watrch my colonies daily for further infestation. Do these bus (nudis) eat anything other than Zoos? Is there any other corals I need to be watching for these bugs.? Do they starve if I remove all the zoos from my tank? Thnks in advance....:) Kimmy

hoe do you set your ph to 8.2?DOES IT HAVE TO BE PERFECT?DOES TEMP HAVE TO BE PERFECT AT 78?
3. Set your PH to 8.2
4. Set your water temp. at 78 degrees

I use ESV's Bionic 2 part buffering system. I simply add enough of the A part to set my PH to 8.2. The objective is to closely match the parameters in your tank to minimalize any shock, stress etc to your corals when doing the dip. The same is true for the temp. Maybe it would be better to say, try to match the temp and PH of your system since this is what your zoos have acclimated to already.

Instead of using 2 drops for a zoo dip, I am now using 5 drops per gallon of RO water with equal results and no harm at all to the last 12 that I have dipped.
