Zoo Dip

dons I wouldn't try it on mushrooms. Maybe do a tank water and iodine dip for those. It can kill hydroids, GSP, and cloves as well.

Zoo Dip Update

Instead of using 2 drops of Lugols for a zoo dip, I am now using 4 to 5 drops per gallon of RO water with equal results and no harm at all. I have used up to 5 drops per gallon on at least 12 new arrivals this year. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s perfectly safe and equally effective.

There is much to be gained from the medicinal properties of the Lugol's. Most importantly, its antiseptic properties when used after doing a bit on surgery on your zoos.

I also wanted to clear something up. I use the same dip for treating sick or nudi infested zoos, as I do with new arrivals that look perfectly healthy. I treat them all the same. I highly recommend running your actinics only for the entire day after a dip. It has work so well for me for many years now. My zoos have always recovered quicker running the actinics only instead of hitting them with 10k's, 14k's etc. right after a dip. Zoos are hardy, yes, but they are still prone to stress. If you don't have actinics, keeping your tank dark for the rest of the day will do the trick as well.

I also believe in checking my zoos out, colony by colony every single morning. I take a quick 5 minute scan every morning, if there is an issue, you must try to tackle it on the first or second day. The longer you wait, the less likely there is a chance that anything will work to bring them back, even the dip. I certainly hope I don't sound like I'm preaching, but you will be surprise at how many zoos that I have saved by catching them day one and hitting it hard with a dip. I can't help it, I just hate to see the stories of polyp lost that could have been salvaged with early detection. I guess we have to treat our zoos like we treat our own bodies. If we stay proactive, I'm positive the number of fatalities will drop.

Just crazy about zoos I guess.

What if the rock has a couple of mushrooms in it, will it hurt them if I dip them in Muchos zoo dip?

I think you would want to remove the shrooms regardless. They will sting the zoos and eventually overtake them. Happened to me, so no more shrooms in my tank ever!

Instead of the Lugols Iodine... will the concentrated iodine put out by Kent Marine work??? I really need to know fast ... I've had this new colony of green button polyps for two days and they have not opened and I noticed the "white milky" substance covering about a quarter of them today... I blew it off with a turkey baster but just now found out about the dip method ....

HELP ME!!

Hi Fishman805, I honestly can't comment on whether or not it will. I have never tried Kents before and I wouldn't want to even speculate and risk it. I have an opinion, which says it should be ok, as Lugol's is highly concentrated.

I would also use a soft tooth brush to remove any residual substance. Sometimes the baster just isn't strong enough to remove it all. If you have tiny or small poylps, remove all but the two center rows on the tooth brush and remove every speck of the cottony buildup on your polyps.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip!

When you dip with Lugol's, do you use the same saltwater that the zoos were in, or is this a Freshwater dip with Lugol's?

Mucho Thanks!

is there a brand of iodine that is more readily available at retail stores than Lugol's? says like a Walgreen's generic ?

there something special about Lugols ?

Hey Much, I just bought the Lugol's to do the dip as you suggested, since I seem to have a couple of colonies that get a brown (fungus?) coating over them that seems to cause them to close up them just die off. Most of my colonies are great, and I did save one a few weeks ago following the directions for your dip. But am just curious. The bottle suggests "40 drops per one gallon of aquarium water" for coral dips. Is that because they are suggesting saltwater? I am going with your suggestion, but would like to know, just for knowing's sake, why they would suggest eight times the strength you suggest. Also, what do you think is going on with mine? I have about 30 colonies at this time and only a few get this and then I move them immediately to the QT when I see it. Thanks for your time. Marcye

This lugols stuff is strong! I put 3 gallons of RO/DI water in a bucket and added 4 drops of lugols. As soon as the rock hit the water a small starfish came off and pratically fell apart on the bottom of the bucket! The nudis came off too after swishing it in the water. Too bad they didn't suffer the same tragic death as the poor starfish...

I use tincture of iodine from a local Long's Drugs in place of the lugol's and it seems to work pretty much the same. Bristle worms and brittle stars came right off.

I also dipped mushrooms with no ill effects.

2 questions, Mucho...

Please clarify your experience with, or what you have heard from others regarding, the various types of Iodine. My understanding is that you use the Lugol's from a pharmacy/drugstore (i.e., made for humans). There is also the Kent Marine Lugol's Iodine, and then the Kent Marine Iodine supplement.

Second, do you have a list of species that should NOT be dipped using this method? My impression is that it is safe for just about any soft/polyp coral, but it would be helpful to know if there are some species that are too sensitive to recover.

I know this has been discussed in some other threads, but it would be nice to have it definitively answered in your thread, as that is where most people go for this information.

Thanks very much for your threads on this- I am just starting out with corals and plan to use this dip whenever I introduce a new specimen.
