Zoo Dip

<a href=showthread.php?s=&postid=7556757#post7556757 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by surfnvb7
i got a question for you guys who have the PH meters, as I dont have one (at least not anymore  )

anyways, i dont really have a pH test kit either, never saw the use for one really now that i'm used to keeping a reef.

but, what i want to know, is in order to prepare this zoa dip (which i have done before, so i'm not a total newb at this), when you have to get the pH set to 8.2.

what chemical are you adding to the RO/DI water to get the pH raised up to 8.2?

and, how much of this chemical are you adding per gallon of RO/DI to get the pH up to 8.2?

the reason i ask, is again, b/c i have no pH testing equipment. so i'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this.

if i had a pH meter, trust me, being a chemistry nerd i'd just figure it out myself

this may just be my opinion but adjusting the PH is a waste of time.

all i'm looking for is the raw chemical name of a buffering salt, and its amount to raise the pH of 1g of water to 8.2.

I don't mean to be rude (I don't work in a chem lab although I took chemistry in college more years ago than i want to say) but it seems to me that you can't give an exact amount of reagent to add to a given amount of water to reach a given pH unless you know the starting pH of the water. That's why you need something to test the pH with.

Right on...then you can use the reef calulator by Randy to find out how much to add...test kits are cheap and our animals are not.

Good luck,

Grant

just a fyi we are dipping them in a solution of iodine and freshwater , it is going to shock them no mater what the PH is .

I never adjusted the PH and i dipped about 100 frags for ten minutes each every week for about two months and had very few fatalities.

if they are your prized specimens then maybe you want to take every precaution.

Can one of you tell me which brand of Lugol's Iodine Mucho Reef was using?
I see many brands of that or are they all the same?
Also can you use the dip for other corals?

There are lots of corals for whom a FW and or iodine dip would be a very bad idea. I would just use this for zoos.

I read of the Seachem, Tropic Marin Pro, Kent Tech-D and Kent Lugol's they are Iodine in all of them.

What is the differant between them?
What corals can you dip with them?

You guys usually dip all your corals when they first arive right?

I am new to dipping corals that is why I asked about the brands all have the same iodine or not which dip is for what corals so I can dip new corals the right way and I will dip all the time.

So anyone know which dip brands for which coral asking again?

My lfs does not have any lugos iodine of any brand. I have some zoos coming in tomorrow that i need to dip. Will the tincture of iodine from a drug store be effective and how much should I add to a gallon?

Here is a pic of some Nudi eggs. I haven't really seen any pics around, so figure these may help.
