Zoo tank and personal updates

Hey folks....I know it hs been a while. I figured i'd check in and offer some status updates. First its nice to see that this board is chugging along.

The zoo tank is still plugging along as well. As some of you may know, there has been some administrative changes at the zoo. Since Mike Janis was removed by the board, the reasons for which are still murky, Sheila, the former head curator was appointed to the position. She as well was subsequently removed. As far as i know, they are still seeking a replacement.

The zoo has been suffering financially and was considering terminating the reef tank to cut back on operating expenses. However, due to its popularity, they have elected to try to keep it going for another year. It is now almost 6 yrs old if you can believe it. It will need some upgrades to keep it functional; mostly the lighting system. The sea horse tank was taken off line to help reduce some costs and maintenance time. The main display actually looks quite amazing since the softies are absolutely HUGE!

At a personal I have decided to discontinue my 90 gallon home display to save on time and money. As some of you may know, by business, Oakdale Psychology Associates got decimated by the flood. We had to move to our new location in Endicott. We got up and running in about a week so we didn't lose a lot of time but obviously we took a significant financial hit. So I will soon be listing stuff for sale as I will be selling the whole system in whole or in part. I sure hope others here survived the flood in tact. My 65 gallon office tank sadly was destroyed by the flood as well:( But life goes on.

So happy new year to everybody and I'll check in again soon! Perhaps if some folks want to see the zoo tank, we can meet up there one of these days. Sundays are typically best for me.

It's been a while since I've been to the zoo and i live right next to it, and I keep hearing about the tank. If your going over please let me know I would really like to see it.....

my tank is newer haven't hit the year mark yet but getting there and I'm having trouble with brown bubble algea, my levels are on spot but my calcium did dip to 330 when my reactor ran out of CO2 which I just refilled, I thought it might be phosphates but they are 0, I did switch from T5's to LED's and am starting to get nervous that might be it? Maybe my tank is just establishing itself? Sorry to hijack your post

Hey Jerry! I'm happy you're able to recover from the flood. I know way too many people that are still trying to recover as well as not being able to recover at all.

Last year I built a LED system for my tank (and childofgod's) and our tanks are doing great. I would be more than willing to lend my hand and experience to build one for the zoo.

Take care.

Happy New Year to you Jerry. Sorry to hear all of this. Alot of people have felt mother natures wrath in the last 5 to 6 years its really sad. As one of the original Zoo tank builders that news is very sad as well. Definitely interested in some corals when your ready to part with them.

Im sorry to hear about everything, I have seen the tank at the zoo a few times and it is very cool esp that STRS members helped mke it happen.

Hey Jerry! Its been a long time... glad to hear you're recovered from the flood. I can't believe it's been 6yrs on the zoo tank, hopefully they're able to keep it going. In the spring, I plan to take my son to the zoo and get a chance to check up on the tank.

Hey Jerry, would love to help if it is needed. I guess I now know what happened to my Hellbender project that I was working with Mike and Sheila on. Did they ever go ahead with it?

Oh ya forgot to mention if you need any help Jerry my daughter and I would be more than glad to help out again. What were you thinking lighting wise? Maybe some people from here in the STRS or even the URS have older MH stuff laying around they could donate for the cause. Allot of people have been going to LEDS but then again I have seen allot of people going back to MH from T-5's. Would they spring for LED's? What other upgrades do you think are needed?

Thanks so much for the responses guys. Dave and TB; thanks for the offers re. help with the lighting. I think we will stay with the t-5 systrem. Its just a matter of replacing lamps and perhaps some re-wiring. I will definitely need hel at some point and so will keep you posted. Dave, you were a huge asset on the original set-up project.

Adam; Nice to see your display is going strong. If ever I need a fix of eye candy, i may have to stop by.

To all others: I will announce when i am planning to stop at the zoo.

Laxing22: Hey ben! Yeah, they went ahead with a small hellbender display down in the lower zoo in the "Multi-species Pavilion". Not exactly a killer display but its something. Man those things are butt ugly!

Whenever your ready Jerry I'm sure there will be enough people here to help you get it done. What other upgrades were you thinking besides the lighting?

Hey Jerry glad to see your recovering from the flood and up running the business. Sorry to hear about the tanks. If you need any help with tear down or anything LMK. I should also be available on some Sunday to help with the zoo upkeep. Great to see the board is still up and going strong.

Heya Vince: Thanks for your kind offer. You have been a huge help throughout the years both with the zoo tank and my personal reefs. Muchos gracias amigo!!!
