zoo tank updates

Jerry I had sea hare Ugly critter he was (Had a face only a mother could love) He took care of all of my Green Hair algae in no time flat. I havent seen him in over 4 months must have died. I didnt have any problems with my tnak from his death ( I'm assuming he is gone due to the fact I think I should see him once in awhile)

Vince is right, I have been using Mexican Turbo Snails (Turbo fluctuosa) and have been very happy with them. I have found they are very effective with red turf algae which is why I initially bought them. Since getting them they have completely wiped out my turf algae. I don’t have any hair algae in my main display so I am not sure how effective they will be with that kind of algae. Another thing I like about them is that they spend more time on the rocks and less time on the glass. Many other snails I have tried prefer the glass and that tends to annoy me. As far as knocking things over I haven’t had any problems at all with that. They seem to get around just fine and don’t bother anything but algae.

Thanks for the great input. I will definityely get some Mexican turbos and a sea hare. Unfortunately, Live Aquaria presently doesn't have sea hares available. Thus I will have to postpone the order until they come available. If anyone sees another site that has them available please let me know. I've checked several sites but no luck. maybe its a seasonal thing.

jerry the sea hares are in stock at live aquaria. the lettes nudi isnt in stock tho, maybe you were looking at that?? also the mexican turbos arnt in stock at live aquaria.

jerry both the sea hare and the turbos are avalible at live aquaria. ill pm you a list of what i need. thanks

I'll probably order Saturday for Tuesday delivery if that works for folks. I'll order one sea hare and two turbos for the zoo as well as some stuff for my home tanks. I received your order Vince. PM me yours Dave. Anyone else?

I was thinking the same Paul. I think I'll wait on the order until the storm passes. And to think, winter hasn't even started!

I performed a 30 gallon water change this am. The tank looks OK. One ocellaris clown is MIA (missing in action).

The day after x-mas the tank will be 6 months old! Should I be ordering new Ro/di replacement cartridges at that time?

Perhaps I can place an Live Aquaria order on Sunday for Tuesday delivery. The storm should have well cleared out. I'll also order a replacement Ocellaris, in addition to the sea hare and some turbos.

Weekly report: I visited the zoo tank Sat. morning. I hand fed the tangs a x-mas size helping of nori. They all come right up to my hand now including the chromis and clownes to eat the nori.

I dumped out the dow flake bucket from the bag we had at the zoo. the stuff i have at home appears to be fine since I've been using it for almost a year with no apparent ill effects. So I filled the top off calcium bucket with dow flake from my home. We will see if over time that helps correct the sps issue. I also brought in some turbos and I lent the tank one of my tuxedo urchins to help oiutht he algae problem. Unfortunately, the sea hare that I purchased and the other turbos were not to be found in my tank before I left for the zoo. I'll grab them when I can and bring them over. I asked the zoo to cut out the mid day feedin g since the tangs look like pigs and we need to reduce the nutrient import. Next step may be to set up a refugium. We'll see.

jerry you shouldnt have thrown out the dow...all of the dow products after 2005 have the higher levels of bromides. so every one that uses it has them in it now. there is a sticky on the chem forum from holemsfarley about it and how it should be alright as long as water changes are prefromed.

Vince, to clarify, I didn't dump our dowflake crystals from the bag of dow flake, just the liquid in the bucket that feeds the CA into the sump. I made up fresh CA with my bag of DOW from home. Its probably just a hopeful superstitious endeavor but I feel a challenge to be able to maintain sps's in the zoo tank.

BTW, the lot number of the dow flake I have at home starts with a "U" and therefpore apparently "safe". I forgot to check the lot number of the zoo bag.

I will be out of town from 1/25 - 1/30. The zoo always calls me when there are questions or emergencies which can and do arise from time to time. We'll need one or two folks to be "on call" in my absence. Chances are nothing will come up. But I'd like to be able to give the zoo a couple of names and #'s.
