zoo tank updates

Very cool site Adam. Great prices on octocorals! Tims supplier appears to0 be taking a personal interest in this and is willing to provide some colorful Gorgo0nians at reduced prices. I'll see how they compare. I'll check out the other stuff as well.

What corals can go along with seahorses. I imagine rics are fine. I know they can't tolerate most sps and lps. All softies I imagine are fine.

Thanks Jeremy. That is extremely useful. At some point, if we can establish a good pod population in the tank, a dragonet (e.g. mandarin) would be very cool.

I finished off a water change at the zoo today. The differenjce in the health of the corals is already notable. The zoo staff vonteered those observations as well. The polyps are more open, the hairy mushrooms which were receeding are regrowing etc. I'm hoping we may not have to replace more diy rock. Some of the rock on the left side of the tank is natural live rock and not all diy. So thus far I am very pleased with what I observe.

Ill probably do another 40 gallon water change this weekend and add some more rock. Once we stabilize alk and ca we can attempt another couple of test sps.

I would say go with Tim's guys by default... but let us know either way as it looks like theres more than enough interest for a group buy

Tims guy will supply stuff for the zoo even cheaper. However, I would like a couple of things for myself from, sealifeinc so whenever you want to put in an order we can do that. The price on rics and octocorals can't be beat.

I will be at the zoo tomorrow (Sat. 4/19) at about 9:30. I will be adding more live rock to the displays, running some tests, putting in some test corals and generally getting things ready for next weekends opening. Please feel free if anyone wants to stop by tomorrow. We can still use some more live sand for the seahorse tank.
Next Friday morning I i will be heading up to ABC reefs to pick up seahorses, gorgonians, macralgae, golden watchman gobies, pipefish, crabs, turbos etc. for the displays. If anyone is up for a ride, let me know.

I was at the zoo to do a bunch of stuff:

The seahorse skimmer wasn't foaming so I had to mess with the rio pump anmd now its working fine.

I added some more rock (from larrybird) to both displays.

I manually removed a bunch of red slime from the 180.

Calc and alk were still running low so I adjusted up buit will still need more. I made up fresh two part solutions to manually supplement the kalk as necessary. We are getting closer to good values though. I just dare not raise it too much at once. I am also slowly raising magnesium to get it above 1300ppm.

I emptied the kalkwasser bucket and made up fresh limewater.

I added some more live sand and two turbo snails from my home tank to the seahorse display.

I had cut test frags but forgot to bring them so I will head back tomorrow.

All softies are looking excellent so if anyone has extra softies for next weekends opening please indicate. I will bring in some green/red rics, marrion mushrooms. I am considering donating my large deresa since I am getting a squammy from Tim. Any other shrooms, rics, zoos, would be great. We have musroom and devil hand leathers but we could use spaghetti leather, colt corals etc if anyone has. I will be able to supply whatever sps we need when we are ready. Plus I will bring in a torch to see if we are ready for LPS yet.

The zoo was very crowded today. People seemed to love the display are anxious for the seahorsies to arrive.

Sorry, I couldn't make it Jerry. I'm in sm-Elmira this weekend. I could try to make it out during the week if anything needs done in prep for this weekend. Did we get a second coat on the window sides??

Adam, No problemo. No second coat but honestly it looks fine as is. I'll be heading over this AM at about 11 to put in some test frags. I don't think it will need anything untill next weekend. I'll be there Friday to situate the new livestock. I'll holler if we need anything.

I went to the zoo again this AM. I put in orange cap, white tipped staghorn, Scripps Green Staghorn, white tipped torch, green ricordia, hot pink zoos, green pavona cactus. Lets keep our fingers crossed and see how they do.

I brought up kalk and Ca to normal levels 11 dkh and 380ppm respectively. So now, if all is well with the tank, the kalk top-off should easily maintain these levels. I also brought up Mg to 1300+. So everything should thrive. We'll see.

Checked HD and unable to find the spring latch I was looking for. What if we put in locks where you would need a key to unlock it. The lock would show on the outside (like the seahorse tank). If we agree I can pick it up and install on Tuesday.

jerry, the Ca should be way higher at the level of Alk. it seems like you would be on the brink of percipitating out at that low level.

Paul: Go for it...just so long as we can make a few keys for us and the zoo. if you do go, let us know how the new frags appear to be doing.

Vince: That is correct but at least we are now in the ballpark. We have good magnesium levels now to hold everything in solution.

Went to the zoo today (Tues 22Apr). The Corals are still alive which is good news. I measured for the lock but the width of the door is 1.5 inches. The lock I was looking at is .75 inches. Guess we need to continue are search.

On a side note when are we putting in the seahorses?

Thanks for trying Paul.
How about we justy get bigger eye-hooks. We have to do something stat! Anybody nhave other idea for an easy/cheap /effective latch system?

I'm glad the new frags are doing well. I will bring some more down Friday.

Tim from ABC reef is coming down on Friday with Seahorses and hopefully some other things.

He was able to get some beautiful blueberry and red sea whip gorgonians but they are photosynthetic species and require high flow and regular feedings. Therefore they are not suitable for our displays. He is attempting to locate photosynthetic gorgonians. If not, we can use the site that Adam posted earlier in this page.
