Zooanthid colour x light

Hi there folks!

What zoos need more and what need less light? I have some green, pink, orange and i'm looking for some blue zoo and would like to know where to place them in the tank. I have 2 x 250W bulbs and one actinic VHO 95W in a 420 liters tank.

Thanks ;)

As far as what zoas need what light, it's hard to say. Blues tend to need less light, but not all.
I would just slowly acclimate your zoas on the bottom of the tank, then move them towards the center of the light and finally up. Unless they really start to thrive in one spot, then leave them.

I have some of the same mother colony that I bought a year or so ago all over the tank.

The ones in the heavy flow - high light area seem to spread like mad.

The ones near the bottom also seem happy and spread, just not quite as fast.

I find zoo's to be happy in many conditions, just experiment in your tank to find what works best.

Thanks prsguy,

I have a small green colony with brown tentacles that seems much happier now in the upper part of the tank. I'll try the same with the pink and them with the others.

Zoanthis sociatus from Florida and the Caribbean needs very strong light, and a few from Fiji and other places out in Micronesa. They live in very shallow water that even gets dry and exposed to direct sun. But they will live in aquariums with just NO flourescents like PC or CF lit tanks. I have taken zoas that were way up under a ledge in the wild, and put them all over a tank lit by MH and VHO, under ledges, on the top of rocks near the top, halfway down the tank etc, and they did just as well. Same with zoas that were collected in very shallow water, even exposed to the sun, all over the tank and they all do well. Even in tanks with NO flourescent lights. Some that like a lot of light will stretch towards the light or the head will get wider, but they will eventualy get used to it and grow just as fast as the others. Some tanks will grow brighter zoas than others, it may be the lighting, water quality or some other thing. If they seem happier in the top, maybe move the rest to the top, or vice versa.

I have kept zoos right under 400 mh with amazing results. All colors, floridas and pacifics. I have bought brown zoos that turned into the best ever in a few months.I think the ppe type palys like less light. Don't quote me on that though. IMO lots of light and flow, maybe a little dirty water.

Me too.
My zoas love the 400 watt bulb, but new arrivals have to be acclimated slowly, so they always go on the bottom and off to the sides.

MY PPE's do best on the bottom and off to the side. They bleached slightly when first introduced, but have added 3 polyps in a few months. They got their color back and are getting to their deep dark color now.
