ZooMed Power Sweep.. Anyone use them?

They are a maintenance nightmare in a reef to keep the rotation of the flow. Had 'em, didn't like them. Only good for a smaller reef tank as far as flow......say under 30 gal or so.

I agree with mwm6, You have to clean them all the time to keep them working right. They really dont put out that good of flow. Work really nice in Fresh Water tank though.

i had 2 once. i threw them out because they would stop rotating for no reason, or just not switch on at all

I have used one in each corner of my 55 gallon for over two years. They give out regularly, especially if you don't keep them clean. They're so cheap though I just consider them a throw away pump. The model I use goes on sale regularly at Foster and Smith for 11.99 so whenever I'm ordering other pet supplies I'll get a couple when they go on sale just to have as back up. I get anywhere from 3 - 6 months out of a powersweep. I haven't done the math to see how many years at this pace would pay for a wavemaker.

Their lack of dependability drives me nuts, but the way my tank is plumbed and the acrylic overhang limits my choices to try and get some non laminar flow. Right now I'm trying a Maxijet with a Hydor rotating flow thing in one corner to see if I like the flow as well as the Powersweep.

I have some Seriatopora right in front of one tht has grown a reallly pretty shape with the alternating current. I really like the wave motion of the corals in the tank, too.

p.s. I just checked your link. I use the 214 and I've never paid 16.95 although that's about where they're at on Drs. Foster and Smith, too right now.

That starts to get high for a throw away pump. I'd stick with the Hydor on the maxijet before I did that.

I bought 3... they worked great for about 2 weeks, 2 stopped turning within a month, the third a month later.

I wouldn't buy them if they were $5/each!

I take mine out and give it a hardcore scrub down inside and out (all of 15 minutes) which keeps it going strong until I do it again.

I used one to mix saltwater... One day it melted and let out a nice oil/melted plastic into my mixing bucket. Definately wasn't happy to throw out a $20 pump and a 30g of saltwater.. Plus I had to spend 4 hours cleaning the bucket and the heater.

Defiantely not pleased with the pump. I wouldn't even consider putting one in my display.
