Zoos OK?

I temporarily have a single bulb 55 watt 50/50 PC fixture over a 29 gal. Is this sufficient lighting for zoos? particularly blue zoos if that makes a difference?

Nah, you'll want to at least double that. If you have the funds, look into a T5 or MH setup. PCs just dont cut it IMO. I run PCs over my tank and I hate it. The colors are lame and so is the growth. If your zoos start growing long stalks and are "stretching" for light, you need more light.

Darker colored specimens particularly Blue and Purple ones prefer less intense light. While Orange and Reds color up better in More Intense lights.

Maybe a week or 2 under your current lighting will be okay without any adverse effects. I agree with Cardgenius, you need at least double the wattage for those zoanthids to really thrive. Invest in a single MH pendant. If heat is an issue with MH's, install some fans or better yet get T5's. T5's have excellent par/intensity and runs way cooler than Halides.

But, if money is an issue right now, try moving your zoos closer to the light or moving the pc fixture closer to the top of the tank or do both.

Hopefully, this helps :)

My first tank was also a 29 gallon tank with 65 watt 50/50. The zoo survived but it was not growing as fast as I hoped.

A 29 gallon tank is on the tall side so it would be better to move the zoo higher. I even removed the feet from the lighting fixture just to bring the lights closer.

Thanks for the advice. Like I said the fixture is temporary. I'm saving right now (student budget) for a 4 bulb ATI T5 pendant. I just wanted to know if I could get some zoos now. I think Im going to get some blue ones and place them higher up on the rocks until I get the T5s. The fixture right now is sitting on a glass top so i cant get it any closer.

If this isnt going to work, please let me know.

Thanks again

You should be okay for the mean time. But, when you get your T5's you'll probably end up moving the blue zoos back down to the bottom of the tank to get re-acclimated to the T5's. T5's have pretty high par/intensity especially if they have the individual reflectors i.e. Sunlight Supply's Tek Lights.

Good Luck :)

Ya I was going to do that as well as the screen method as I don't wanna melt my mushrooms or the zoas.
