'07 Regional Club Frag Swap in Dixon- Guidelines & Bonus Round Consideration

except noobs like me! This is the first frag swap I will be in the rare catagory, I'm excited. well.....still trying to get the nerve to frag the orange tipped cloves...so I am not there yet.

Wasn't really worried, even without being in a rare catagory, or anything I always leave these swaps with a handful of really nice stuff.
But just for something to drool on, what are you going to be adding?
I am working on a bunch of common stuff to add as well, me and my wife, and my nieghbor are all going to be drawing so there is no doubt we will be getting something good...and I am bringing a bit of cash for the raffle, I got some really nice stuff from the BAR swap last Feburary just off the raffle alone.

That would spoil the surprise, but I was thinking rose nebulas, maybe some purple deaths for starters. Maybe something called $500. That will be a game time decision. ;)

not sure what the rose nebula is, I would like to get a hold of some of the purple deaths, the $500 is beyond my ability to keep so far, atleast at this point <I miss a water change and my SPS's start dieing,so not really wanting to try a lot of SPS at this point>

I receive a couple of verification requests through PMs, but realistically, only about half of the people bringing rares do participate in these threads.

We'll definitely see more on the big day;)

I really dislike the "bonus" or "rare" segments. Perhaps a separate swap should be held just for "rare" pieces. Q: Do folks participating in this round have access to all tables or just the "bonus" or "rare" table?

It encourages people to bring in pieces that either don't get spread around as much, or bring a huge number of frags, which was definitely the case last year.

All of the frags are mixed in together, and are usually separated only by group (i.e. sofites, LPS, SPS, misc.).

It's a win-win for everyone, but offers incentive to those that share a lot.

How can you dislike it? If I bring two rare pieces, I typically get one new rare piece. Which mean that people who did not bring rares have the chance to go home with a rare. They just need to know what is rare on the table.
So while all the people who already have rare pieces have the chance to aquire a new rare piece, all of the people looking for rare pieces but do not have them, have a chance to aquire a rare piece.
It is an excellent way to spread corals around, and a great chance for those that do not have, to aquire, and for thos that have to have new.

Besides to aquire a bonus ticket you can also bring 15 common frags, which many people can gather in an established tank. And for anyone that brings 15 corals that means that 12 more corals the usual will be passed around, if that person gets a premium coral pick for his/her effort, then go for it.

Even with out rare corals I left the frag swap from BAR with 4 premium pieces. I got a good 1 inch piece of Leng Sy cap, and large frag of ring of fire zoanthids, two pieces of Poker star monti, and about 8 other more common pieces.

It's simple.......I just don't like it! I don't have lack of understanding of your fundamental logic. I seem to have done fairly well at swaps without this category as well. But it's certainly not enough of an issue to keep from the October swap.......I've got more important things to focus on in life!

Then why post?

Mark,
Nice...Rose nebulas are purty :). Someone will be very lucky to walk away with the $500...That corals is sooooo sweeeeet :D.

I am sure there will be lots of really nice corals regardless of "categories", "rares", etc. It will be great to just see folks as well. I already have a few nice things fragged to bring. Thinking of what to add to the stash.

Because as a member of MARS and this reefing community, I think it important that we continue to share thoughts, likes, dislikes, essentially a wide range of divergent opinions without fear of ridicule or reprisal, especially when it comes to shaping club policy and direction (though this may not have been the case here as the sponsorship of this event by MARS is still unclear to me). Why do you find the need to challenge? I wish not to defend myself or turn this into a debate. Again, I have more important things to do. Let's move on.....please.

Are these considered rare? If so, how many polyps?

Pink Stardust People Eater zoanthids, i consider these a sibling to the Rose nebulas

Purple Death, Nuclear Greens, Purple People Eater, Purple Hearted Emeralds (PHE) - photos all on zoaid if you're not familiar with palys/zoas.

Thanks

I know the last four you mentioned should be good to go. I am doing frags of 2-3 polyps. This should be fair. What do you think? You are much more of a softie expert than I am. I would love some feedback. Thanks

I think that's fair for paly's, as 3 polyps can pretty much cover a plug when grown and open. But for zoas I think should be at least 5 polyps, anything less IMO would be a hassle for the giver and reciever.

PD, NG, and rose nubulas are all being marketed @ $50-69 per polyp. That is why I thought three were fair.
PPE are pretty much the same way.

True, they are being marketed that way. Good thing were a bunch of local hobbyists for a swap and not a bunch of retailers at a convention! ;)

In all honesty you and I both know who ever got those zoos paid 25$ for the colony just like every other retailer. Zoos come in like flavors of the month, albeit PPE's have been around for a while and are still very scarce.

I have a handfull of corals that retail at $80 an inch, we havent had the chance to hang out yet but if you knew me, you would know I could not look you in the eye nor anyone for that matter and hope to obtain it's retail value or even a few bucks under retail if I were to sell a frag. I even buy frags from local reefers here at 1/2 and a 1/3 the retail price and turn around and sell it for half of what I paid.

I think the only thing that really bothers people about the rare category is the spirit of the swap get's lost. Yes it increases the amount of the swap 10 fold, but rather than the brother-hood amongst reefers, it becomes like an investment trade or more of a tit-for-tat, and what can I get since I brought this, and that frag retails 10$ less a polyp than mine so I should get more, or bring less..

I think if something cost you 50-100 for a polyp, that coral may not be the best candidate to let roll around on the frag table for a few hours, especially if it's 1 or 2 polyps. Those are usually last to get picked and get the most banging around, by the time it finally makes the noobs house who wasnt really set up with a stable tank to begin with ends up killing 2 zoa that just happen to go for 100 bucks, wastefull. Those deals are best left for side deals and trading IMO, then everyone has a good feeling, and the poor noob is left feeling guilty cuz he just found out he burned up some golden polyps and the giver doesnt feel like he did it for nothing . But if you have a bunch of it and it aint gonna break your bank to frag it then that coral would be a good choice.
