So this wknd I inherited a 20 long with a clown and a damsel. The damsel can go but I'd like to start a reef tank and keep the clown because he's fun to stare at! When I got the tank there was no sand bottom or anything. Just glass with algae. So I basically started over and after it was clean, I added a couple inches of Caribsea Livesand and they are much happier now. Any suggestions on where to go from here and also what to expect from the current living arrangements would be great!

I would recommend picking up Mike Paletta's New Marine Aquarium or Joyce Wilkerson's Clownfish book. Aside from that I would definately donate the damsel to the LFS and get a mate for the clown that is as small as you can find. You might post a clear pic of the clown on here for ID purposes to make sure you have what you think you have.

More liverock and circulation would be a good place to start for making that tank into a reef. I would recommend looking into compact flourescent lighting, though you could probably do well with just ordinary strip lighting on a tank that size. If you go with any sort of flourescents, I would recommending changing them out once every six months as they tend to yellow and lose their intensity over that duration.

Find some people near you and maybe join a local reef club, this will be a great source of both information and cheap or even free coral frags.

GOOD LUCK!!!
