Its been 1 full year that the tank has been up and runnen. Changed some plumbing. But not real happy with the big tank and how the corals are doing.

That is a sweet looking tank you did a hell of a job, and I have to say the thread from your build with the He Man and Star Wars figures was still one of the funniest I've seen on RC

Cheer up little buddie! The tank looks great!

Can I bring you some soup? I have enough to share.

Give me back that Filet-O-fish, Give me that fish

Seriously though, what more could you expect after a year? Show us again after another year, with the continued good husbandry practices you will see a large change during this time, IMO.

YA THERE WAS ALOT OF FUN TIMES BEORE. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THIS ONE GOING.

- SOUP?? GRAMPS I LIKE POTATO SOUP.

- ILL KEEP POSTING BUT I JUST FEEL IM LIKE STUCK WITH GROWTH NOT REALLY GOING ANYWERE. LIKE LOOK AT THE FRAG TANK, THAT IS ALL ON THE SAME SYSTEM. THE CORALS HAVE GREAT PYLOP EXTENTION ,GOOD GROWTH AND COLOR. THE BIG TANK , THE SPS SEEM DULL NOT REALLY GROWING. THE ONLY DIFFERANCES ARE THE FRAG TANK HAS A DEEP SAND BED, 250 WATT 10000K XM HL VS. 250 WATT 12000 K REEFLUX BULBS , NO FISH PER SAY. RACENRICH SAID MAYBE I DIDNT HAVE ENOUGH TURN OVER RATE OF WATER IN THE BIG TANK LIKE THE 40 GALLON , SO I WENT FROM 2 - 3/4" INLETS TO 1 - 1 1/2" INLET AND YES THERE IS GREAT AMOUNT OF MORE WATER POURING INTO THE OVERFLOW BOX. BUT HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING DIFFERENT WITH THE CORALS. SO NEXT IM THINKING OF ADDING A SAND BED. I DONT KNOW?

she is going to say vitamin C.

Even though you have a good amount of actual water turn over, you might not have enough random flow to keep SPS really happy.

The other issue that I found recently was that my old spider reflectors simply werent doing the job. I upgraded to lumenbrights and now I cant even keep up with my calcium needs and have a CA reactor on the way. I am not sure what type of reflectors you are using, even though I know it was in your other threads.

What are you doing to keep up with your calcium needs?

I noticed much of the same things with the flow in my 180... I know its a smaller scale than yours but I had my tunzes at 30% flow because I was worried about it becoming a sandstorm in the tank, but now that everything has settled in there I have slowly raised it to 60% over the past 2 weeks and its been a great change so far, Im seeing alot more PE on all my SPS, even the fish look like theyre having more fun. :D

If you try to look through the visqueen you can kinda see the reflector bottom, looks like LB's to me already

As for the vitamin C thing, I saw NO DIFFERENCE when I tried it, I ended up trading away the bottles of it I had left. So take that stuff with a grain of salt. I would say read up on it and see what you think, then give it a try if you want to.

Personally I think that regular water changes with good salt are the best thing you can do for your tank.....

Im also curious to see what youre doing to keep up with your calcium demands...

Im personally dosing kalk, but think I might have to step up to a CA reactor soon...

EDIT - Just looked at his photobucket album of pictures and found this old shot:

Im using the same setup of LB's with Reeflux 12Ks, on coralvue ballasts.... the only difference is it doesnt look like yours are the adjustable coralvue ballasts, what I've heard you can do is theres an adjustment screw inside of those ballasts that you can turn up to overdrive the bulbs and squeeze some more par out of them. I dont know how true that is because mine are the adjustable ones and I can overdrive them with the twist of a knob, but it might be worth researching a little....

I LOVE the color of the 12k reeflux'es but might try a new bulb when the time comes to squeeze out some more growth.... I guess the other option would be jumping to 400w'ers, but I dont see the need to raise my electrical bill any higher than it is now.

I just read a lengthy post about the new reeflux 20ks and it seems theyre putting out more par than the 12ks.... looks like I know what my next bulb choice will be.....

"Even though you have a good amount of actual water turn over, you might not have enough random flow to keep SPS really happy"

-I GOT 4 -6200 TUNZES PLUS THAT 1 1/2" RETURN. I PUT ANY MORE IN THERE ITS GOING TO LOOK LIKE A SNOW GLOBE.

"What are you doing to keep up with your calcium needs?"

-THERE REALLY ISNT A NEED I CHECK IT ALL THE TIME AND ITS AT 420 TO 440. I AM DOING 20 GALLON A WEEK WATER CHANGES.

"had my tunzes at 30% flow because I was worried about it becoming a sandstorm in the tank"

-I HAD MINE ON INTERVAL 2 FOR ALONG TIME WITH IT ON FULL BLAST BUT ONE SIDE WOULD SHUT DOWN AND THEN THE OTHER. BUT NOW I HAVE MOVED THE TUNZES NEXT TO EACH OTHER AT BOTH ENDS OF THE TANK AND HAVE THEM ON PULSE AT FULL. IM HOPING THIS WORKS.

water changes with good salt "

-I USE REEF CRYSTALS AND INSTANT OCEAN. LIKE I SAID MY LEVEL ALL SHOW GOOD CAL, MAG, ALK.

doesnt look like yours are the adjustable coralvue ballasts"

-THERE NOT BUT MIKE FROM REEF SPEACILTY SHOWED ME HOW TO TURN THEM UP , THERE IS A DIAL INSIDE. THATS AN OPTION BUT I THINK I WOULD WANT TO LOOK MORE INTO THAT. I DID HAVE TO TURN ONE OF THEM UP A WHILE BACK THOU.

" jumping to 400w'ers, but I dont see the need to raise my electrical bill "

- MY GOD NO DOUT

before with tunzes

You aren't moving stuff around a lot are you? I find that when stuff gets moved it takes a month or two to start growing again. I don't think you're the kind of person who would do that but you never know. I always had people coming into the shop saying that their stuff wasn't growing and they kept moving it to what they thought were better places when in reality it was them messing with it that was inhibiting growth.

It looks like the rockwork was defnitely changed around from the first picture to the second one, not sure if he moves anything else around or not though....

I would say just keep an eye on your levels and let it go some more..... You can go to the 10K range bulbs to pump out some more par if youre concerned with it, but I think youll be just fine, just need to give them some more time. Im past the 8 month mark now and Im just starting to notice all my corals seem to be growing steadily now....

Im going to try out those 20K reefluxes next.... :D

"You aren't moving stuff around a lot are you"

-NO NOT AT ALL, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH LEAVEN THINGS PUT. I DO MESS WITH DIFERENT FEATURES OF THE TUNZE SETTINGS HERE AND THERE.

I GUESS ILL SIT BACK AND WAIT A LITTLE MORE JUST DONT WANT TO SEE THINGS DIE. I WILL BE ALSO GOING WITH THE 20K BULBS HERE NEXT FOR SURE, BUT THEY ARE ALOT MORE BLUE.

THAT TOP PIC IS LIKE WITHEN THE FIRST MONTH.

- ANY OF YOU NO HOW TO GET RID OF THEM LITTLE NUSANCE STAR FISH??? I GOT A HARLIQUIN SHRIMP, BUT HELL THERE IS A TON OF THESE THINGS. I CAN TELL THERE MESSING WITH THE CORALINE.
