Paying people to risk their lives on rebreathers to go and collect shrimp at a not inconsiderable amount of feet is outrageous? we don't have the luxury of being able to buy invertebrates from where shallow colonies exist, all of ours occur well below where traditional diving can safely get to and because of it we pay for it. It's not really great but you must understand it is for a reason.
The licenses required for aquaculture here are what is obscene, the red tape you've gotta go through to commercially breed anything is not worth the effort to be perfectly honest.

There's licences and stuff involved with collecting off the reefs and it's all done in a very controlled fashion, but because we're such a small population relative to the reef it makes very little impact. I mean, I can understand why there's such strict control - if things end up in the wild after being aquacultured they could have mutated pathogens that would cause major damage... but it doesn't stop it being frustrating as hell.
