10 day fry

I have about 25 of these little guys left. They sure are hard to get to stand still for a picture. I think they're getting close to mmp. I can see a bit of orange in some of them but not this guy.

That's a great pic! Congrats! What sized tank are you growing the fry in? What are you feeding them? I may be getting a mate for my maroon clown soon. Wish me luck.

Dan,
They're coming up to the critical metamorphasis time. You might re-read your Clownfishes book regarding waterchanges and feeding. Much smoother sailing after metamorphasis. Best of Luck.

I've lost quite a few in the last couple days but most seem to be through meta now. Very little orange on the fish, look like black and white stripes. Some orange as they're in the process though. I'm sure some of the orange will come back but the parents are predominantly black.

What a great (or lucky) picture! :-) I tried and tried to get a pic when mine were at that stage and could never catch it so good.

Good job and good luck!

thanks. I have a decent SLR which makes it easier. Sadly most of my pics are "still lifes" taken through my toy microscope....

Man. I lost a whole bunch of fry today. They had mostly gone through MMP but it looks like they ate too much. I'm not sure how to feed them and still get enough to the smaller fry...

about 16 left it seems that all but 2 of fry left are not through mmp. The ones that died were almost all the most advanced.

They are eating BBS between 36 and 48 hours old.

edit: they hatched on Aug. 27th.

It does look like overeating from the picture and Clark's are known for it. Are you decapsulating the brine shrimp to make sure there are not shells to block the intestines? I don't know, but I thought you needed to keep the brine shrimp around 24 hours to 36 max even at 15 days. Have you tried any ground flake yet?

How frustrating to make it through mmp, feel like you're clear and then lose a bunch of juvis. The one you show is well along wilth all his stripes. Sorry.....

How do they act? Are they spinning around and then going to the bottom when you feed or shortly after? Or are they dying at night?

I hope the rest make it for you. Good Luck

I am decapping. I start the culture just before lights out each night and then they get 16 hours of light alongside the fry tank the next day and then I feed them throughout the following day. They are around 70 degrees. I guess I can start the next culture in the morning but then some would be only 24 hrs. old and I don't want to end up with none hatched on occasion.

These are the last of my SF Bay eggs. Starting with the next culture it will be GSL eggs.

I don't notice any particular strange swimming. There are a couple of fry that seem to 'scurry' around the surface and the fry that are through mmp seem to hang out low in the corners more.

I am giving them frozen CE on occasion but it seems to mostly float to the bottom.

I have been putting in about a pints worth of rots in each day for the smaller guys too but I think I'll stop that as ther eare only a couple that seem small enough to need the rots.

I read somewhere that you want to start mixing in flake food as soon as possible(right away)because feeding only brine shrimp caused the babies to be more prone to the "dash around the tank and then die" syndrome.

Dan, you can keep feeding them rots for months. They never seem to overeat and die on rots nor will they starve if they had rots and no BBS. I think you are OK just starting one batch of BBS a day. I did mine in the evenings. I think maybe you just overfed. Put smaller amounts in at a time. You can always add more. I had three bottles percolating at a time. One new bottle, second bottle 24 hours older and the third a day older but was mostly havested the day before and would be fed to the reef if the babies didn't need them.

My Chromis' even like rots. I don't think clowns ever get too old for them. Hard for me to remember but, I think at that age, I fed 60% rots, 20% BBS and 10% Golden Pearls. I have a bottle of SF Bay brand BBS in my frig if you want. Aquatic Gallery had some new food that they are using instead of Golden Pearls. I don't know if they were selling it or if it was just for their own larvae. Tom there is an experienced clown raiser.

Are straining your rots before adding them? Their water is pretty dirty.

Better luck with the next batch.

Btw, Robin, had told me the same thing that Phil said.
Less BBS and more high quality dead foods (ie Golden Pearls, flake, Cyclop-eeze). They really like the BBS better but it is like candy for babies.
