10 'most rare' SPS corals for a Tank

The CITES paper work for almost all aquarium cultured corals in the states (ie.ORA, TYREE and anything else) is long gone.....no one can legally import these corals. Of course there are work arounds for people who want to stretch things....

this really sucks for us up here ... we should all send a letter to Ottawa lol but not sure if there are enough reefers up here.

work arounds ? hmm lol

I have a friend who sais he brings corals up here dry ! wrapped in newspaper ! I travel to USA alot for work , but never tried that ... not sure if a frag can last 6-7 hours dry ! but again, I received a anemone dry [30 hours] and its doing fine !

anything with more than 1 color is counted as rare here lol

whaaaat......I would argue Toronto is in the top 3 places in North America for SPS corals. Some real nice tanks around, most of the corals I have owned are not named or even "rare", but plenty nice under the right conditions.

oh I agree 100% about "nice corals". my fav thing is getting wild corals from SUM and NAFB and coloring them up and they always surprise me with the nice colors they show.

but my point was more about "rare corals" :)

Dont know how rare it is but I have only ever seen just the one I have. Not a good pic white balance is not right so it looks really brown, sps on the sand bed under the undata.

Looks like cyphastrea with polyps extended.

Yeah its polyps are always out when then lights are on. I will need to see how the growth pattern develops but as I said it is a very slow grower. All my other corals grow pretty fast but not this one.

I was going to say that. I have seen some amazing stuff up in Canada tanks, I think some may have been from 250G's tank ;)

Why not try to become friends with some of Canada's best reefers? I know they have some great stuff, I (from So Cal) have been jealous of many corals from Canada, in this forum.

I know you'd like to have rare corals, but I'd suggest getting corals that YOU like the most. I've always wanted to get rare corals and I've spend some serious loot obtaining some, but some of my favorite SPS pieces are the cheapest ones in my tank.

AMEN! Is any else getting burned out on the "named" corals? Ive had browned out ugly corals that turned out to be stunning in a few short years.

Its only going to be "rare" for so long anyways especially after i get it and grow it and then frag it and then sell it cheap. :D

No I dont think it is any of those either. The pic is older I will get a new better one. The polyps are fully extended in the pic and it has a hard encrusting base like a monti only with large coralites and polyps. Even the really good local reef store where I got it was unsure of what it was so no positive ID yet.

He is actual person who owns an Lfs nearby . ORA named to the coral after him .

Ya iit took me a little while to figure that lol his coral is really nice actually.

Does ORA not release the source of their corals because they don't want anyone to know where they get it from or are they too lazy to deal with CITES for exporting to Canada?

Problem is they get there corals from all over the place so maybe they were not the ones to import it......that's why they wouldnt have cites for it. And lets face it....we are a small potatoes market......

A lot of ORAs corals come from people. When I used to be a dealer I often talked to them about sending them some nice pieces I would cherry pick from the wholesalers.. I was going to send them my acans years ago but didn't want to part with them.. Ha.
