100 Gallon Cube Tank Build

Tonight I found exactly what I was looking for to mount my suspended canopy. I wanted something that could be easily moved up and down, without having to stand on a chair and move chain around (I am lazy). After looking and becoming frustrated because I was unable to voice exactly what I was thinking, voila! I found what I was looking for!!! I will be the first to admit that it looks a bit ugly in this picture, so I kind of want to see it in person before I order it, but I'm hoping that maybe I can paint it to blend in with the ceiling a little better.

Light Hanger

So its a mini blind for lights?

How much weight can it support?

Have you thought about using something like this?

IIRC its an LCD TV wall mount with an aluminum bar mounted to it for the lights to attach to.

Make sure the old man puts cross bracing on it.:D

I got your crossbracing ....PUNK!

Actually, her sump will be in the way but don't think that I wouldn't do it otherwise!:D

Thats no celebration ... Making the thread split is ;)

Chelsey - Your thread has officially been subscribed :D

they also have those things that are normally used in garages that lift bikes to the ceiling. I'm sure you can rig it to lift lights outof the way.

I am officially a nerd...I just finished making a placement table for all of my corals (lighting, flow, etc) so that I get optimum color and growth. Hopefully with this I won't have any problems when it comes time to put everything in my cube.

You are in good company, I've even done full animations of fish to scale swimming in the tank with simulations to see if they had enough room. I am not too versed in coral yet but I'm sure I will also do the same to see if they get enough flow and light :)

Here are the pics! :bounce1:

Please excuse the calcium reactor box, Chad was messing with my new toy ;)

Here's the schedule:

Tonight/Tomorrow - silicon baffles in sump (emptied it earlier today)

Next weekend - drill holes in the stand where the overflow is, plumb tank + sump, and depending on when my marco rocks arrive (if they ever do) I'll be filling it with water and putting the rock in :)

Rock process - once the rock gets here I'll fill the tank and sump, make sure the skimmer is running, and blast the heck out of the marco rocks with tunzes to get all of the junk out of the rock. I'll stay barebottom at that point in time to prevent things from settling in the sand and the sand being blown around by the tunzes. I'll have a few pieces of rock from John's tank to help "seed" this rock.

One week after adding rock - I'll be checking on the parameters and seeing how clean the rock is. If it passes inspection I'll be adding my sand, with some of John's sand to help seed it. I'm fully expecting this to start cycle #2, so...

One week after adding sand - provided the cycle is done I'll be adding critters from ISPF and Inland aquatics to get a jumpstart on the biological filtration/making sure my rock and sand is live.

One/two weeks after adding bugs - I'll be putting in corals. Zoas first, SPS probably a little bit later

One week after adding corals - It's time for my fish to move into their new home!

Once the sps start to encrust on the rock - I'll move my cleanup crew (or what's left of it) from the sump into the main display tank and will buy whatever else I need to clean up stuff. I know this seems a little backwards, but one of my pet peeves is painstakingly placing my corals only to have them knocked over by stupid snails!

A few weeks after that I'll probably add my lavendar tang and will slowly add the remaining fish :)

So, in answer to your question, I have about another month, maybe a little longer, until I have a functioning reef tank :)

RCT = Reef Culture Technologies: http://www.rcthawaii.com/purchase/1.htm

I'm not convinced that my tank is big enough for those 3 angels, but I'm hoping that the Golden and Flameback will get along. I have no idea when RCT will be back up and running but I'm willing to wait until they are to get an interruptus. In the meantime I'll have the flameback and golden, and when I get the interruptus if one or both of those guys need to go I'll find them good homes :)

If I'm correct this fish would be the Japanese Pygmy Angelfish and there site claims that they rear them. Being as it would most likely be a CB fish you may not have to much of an issue. Beautiful fish either way it goes.

Well, it's a little cold to go outside and hose down my sump, but we did manage to get the holes drilled in the stand and foam today. Later this afternoon I'll be going to a graphics store and getting some black vinyl sticker stuff to put on the back of my tank (instead of painting it). I also found out that my rock will make it to Marco rocks Wednesday and they hope to ship it out that day or Thursday (which is good, because I've been waiting forever! :p )

Latest update:

I siliconed all of the baffles in my sump and am waiting for the silicon to dry. The tank can "legally" have water in it this weekend, but since my marco rocks aren't here yet (no word on them) there's not really any point. I hope to get the vinyl sticker background put on this weekend (it's a two person job). My light hanger thingies came in this week as well...if I'm lucky we'll get the lights hung this weekend too! :)

Will the vinyl stick inside a tank? I'm turning my old sump into a nano and need to blacken the baffle. My choices are vinyl, Krylon Fusion, or a thin piece of black acrylic.

I seriously doubt it would stick inside a tank, but you could always try it. I recommend a thin piece of black acrylic.

I managed to put the black vinyl on the back of my tank tonight. After working for quite some time I decided to call it a night and work on getting the bazillion bubbles out tomorrow. On tomorrow's agenda is hanging the light fixture and moving the sump downstairs (the silicon is currently drying and the tank is in my living room). Before too long it'll be time to plumb! :)

Class just started Tuesday, we don't really have homework. I do have an assignment due Tuesday though...gotta keep those priorities in order!

Chad's working on hanging the lighting as I type this :D

Canopy is up and the lights are in and look great! :) We had more than a little trouble finding a stud, despite having a studfinder...this house is rigged
