100+ head duncan colony

It's hard to keep track counting as it's so compact and there's so many now, but I can count like 1/3rd of it and be at 40, so I'm guessing it's around 100-120 heads.

It's about 7" long and 5.5" wide to give an idea on size.

I have it directly under a purple plus, aquablue special, blue plus, and coral plus in an 8 bulb fixture (first four bulbs), and the purple/ABS really brings out reds/pinks well. It's a piece that's quickly outgrowing my system as I really don't have anywhere for it to go (aside from in the back, which I don't want to do), but I've had it for so long that I don't want to get rid of it.

Mine is on it's way to looking like that someday. How long did yours take to grow that large?

Here's the oldest photo I could find of it (sorry it's terrible haha), this is from January 2015. It's not a very good photo but you can clearly see the growth over 14 months to have a reference. I've personally had it closing in on two years, but the guy I got it from had it a few months as well but I don't know how long. It was around 40 heads when I first obtained it. It's been in four systems now total, two of which were mine and one was my brothers. I used to be a big believer in using water changes to replenish alk/calcium, and ultimately it does work, but the parameter swings really slow growth. If I had ran my systems like I have since last year and dosed it would be double what it is now.

That's a big difference in the size it came from, Nice duncan!

I wish mine looked like that. Mine is a single head frag cut from a 30 head colony. For some reason it's not starting new heads but just making the one bigger and bigger. It's head is about a 1" diameter and with the tentacles it's about 2" across. Not sure what the deal is. Funny thing is I just started getting coraline a couple months ago and the skeleton on it is starting to encrust. Lol

Stony coral growth overall, even LPS, can depend on parameter stability. I had a torch coral that didn't grow much in over a year, and then one day it just started growing. I correlated this to no longer depending on water changes to fix my parameters, which was causing instability, and dosing 2 part. Even if you only have 5ml of 2 part consumption a day, your tank will thank you and you'll see that rise rather quickly due to growth taking off.

If you're already dosing it probably just needs time, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Dosing isn't relevant on my tank yet. I have bionic 2 part but haven't even opened it as my parameters stay very consistent with only 4 lps frags and a bubble tip in a 40b. I've tried sps frags 4 times. Usually 3-5 frags per try. Just can't seem to keep them happy long term. They usually last about 2-4 weeks before the polyps receded and they die off. The tank in only 8 months old or so but about 2 months ago it finally started growing coralline so it's going the right way. Just need to let it mature some more before I give it another go.

Have you tested your po4? SPS not thriving in your tank is a sign of something being off. If you have elevated nutrient levels it can inhibit coral growth and even kill some more sensitive ones.
