100% silent protein skimmer possible?

Every protein skimmer I've heard makes tons of noise, even ones that are supposed to be pretty quiet like the remora and others. Is it even possible for a skimmer to be 100% silent because of the nature of skimming?

What's silent or quiet to some may sound like a washing machine to others. This is completely subjective and difficult to recommend any brand or style over another. By the very nature of skimmer function, some noise will be generated. By eliminating the noisier components (pumps, air or water injectors) one could say that the quietest would the simple air-lift style. Other than that....

If you want silent I would look for one that uses an aquabee or an eheim pump. This is from experience..

Even if you could find a pump that is perfect and generated no noise whatsoever, you'd still have the sound of bubbles popping. I think it is pretty obvious that a noiseless skimmer isn't possible...

I've heard that Tunze DOC skimmers are just about the quietest skimmers you can find. You might want to look into them.

If your skimmer is too noisy and it's in a bedroom or something, then just put it on a timer that will allow it to not run while you are sleeping. Many people do well even without a skimmer, there's no law that states that since you have a skimmer it needs to run 24 hours a day. That's just my advice.

I agree about the Tunze being the quietest. I have a Tunze 9005 and it is nearly silent. No pump noise at all. The only thing you can really hear is the sound of the water trickling out of the outlet tube. I have had a remora, a bakpak, and a euroreef on previous tanks and the Tunze is nearly silent compared to these.
