100% Silicone

Real quick question for you DIY gurus. Is it reef safe? I'm not using it for structure rather I'm using it to adhere some float switches in the sump.

A quick response and possibly some literature explaining it will be grateful.

Thanks!

Which one are you using? Some have mildewcides or antifungals which aren't the nicest thing to have around your system. Not exactly world-ending, but still...

Its by red devil.. Prior to purchase, I read the tube for any signs of anti anything, and there's nothing.. My memory tells me 100% is safe but... I want to be certain before I use it.

Why not use something that is anecdotally known not to cause problems? Like GE silicone I? (Although once properly cured, none of the silicones in common use, including Silicone II, can be proven to cause problems) To be perfectly clear, "Reef Safe" is a myth, as nothing (raw material wise) is produced to be "reef safe" nor has any of it been "lab tested" for "reef safety."

Silicone would not be my first choice for mounting float switches, rather brackets, that cannot fall off, and the switches securely mounted to the brackets.

I used silicone to stick float switch brackets to my sump walls, and they all ended up falling off (or knocked off). Plus, don't know about you, but I always seem to end up moving mine around. Better option is to either use a bracket (DiY or autotopoff.com sells them) or an old mag float (sized to the glass thickness).

Uncle,
You were the authority I hoping to hear from. thanks for the advice and information. as for GE 1 or 2... I could never commit that to memory. I think it was due to all the confusion and arguing over which was which....

ca1ore,
Thanks, this bracket was put on 8 years ago and didn't cause me any problems. After a 5 month drought I decided to modify things a bit before I start filling it with salt water.

GE I acetoxy cure
GE II neutral cure, "more" toxic in its uncured state than acetoxy cure.

Both are inert, once cured. Anecdotally, from experience, and the experience of reliable sources, neither causes a problem in reef tanks once fully cured.
