1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Im very excited that I think I finally have my sump and skimmer nailed down. Thanks to Silef for his help and hospitality in showing me his set up. If you recall previously from this thread, there was a lot of back and forth on deciding open vs closed loop and the exact filtration and piping. Attached is a schematic after numerous consultations, calculations and the sort of exactly what we decided to do.

In short, we eliminated the closed loop system. Just too many potential issues and maintenance can be problematic in case of a leak. I wont rehash the whole decision other than to say my goal is to keep the plumbing as simple and efficient as possible and this goes a long way towards accomplishing that goal.

As such, here is a new schematic of what Im planning on doing.

There will be 2 drains and two returns for the water flow plus plenty of power heads, wave makers and the such to ensure that through the filter and skimmer we get 10x flow (roughly 10,000 gph) and that we get roughly 40x flow through the whole tank. That will come from the power heads.

Im planning on getting a custom sump so that all the equipment (or atleast as much as possible) in the sump itself so that plumbing is minimal and maintenance is easy. The schematic shows plans for filter socks, skimmer, UV and media reactors.

At this time I don't know what else I need to run in terms of filtration but that should pretty much cover it. I know there are a 1000 different things you can do for filtration and everyone has their biases but in my opinion, sometimes simplicity is best and thats how we are planning it.

I will set up the RO/DI unit with automated water changes. The whole system will be likely apex controlled and the skimmer will have an auto wash feature so that cleaning the system will comprise of washing the filter socks as needed and keeping the glass clean on the aquarium.

Yes I understand that there are a ton of other duties required to maintain a large tank but this setup should accomplish my goal of simplicity.

With regards to the rest of the house, paint is scheduled to be completed later this week. Cabinets, trim, doors, tile all start a week from today. Fireplaces and other stone is going in the house.

Lots to show you guys in about 2 weeks when there will be significant changes made.

whatever you do, just make sure you got lots of unions and valves everywhere ;) your system will change over time no matter how good you plan!

Agree that all systems evolve over time. However even if things evolve, the sump will remain the same. Water in, water out. I can always run a manifold off the sump to add stuff later.

Curious, have you considered Ozone instead of UV?

I have but I hear that UV is more fool proof and ozone you have to fiddle with it more. Im assuming you are doing ozone? Im open to hearing about the benefits of ozone and not opposed to having ozone.

I agree with you, the advantage of UV is that it is very foolproof....turn it on and change the bulb as needed. I am going to give Ozone a try on these systems, it will be my first time using it. I used UV for several years on my current 240, while I'm sure it was doing some good, when I stopped using it I noticed no difference in the tank.

My hope is that I will see a difference in water clarity from the Ozone. The skimmers I'm going to use allow Ozone to be pumped into the skimmer directly. I'm hoping this will make it very simple and low maintenance.

Chemistry was not my favorite science, so I found this article informative for me. Though several years old, it was the best info I could find.

You could start a real battle royale over using UV. Some people swear their systems run better with it while others see no benefit to justify the cost. There are clear effects using ozone, but it is so powerful that you need to pay a lot more attention to it. Ozone not only kills whatever is in your water, it can also corrode pipes and hoses that aren't ozone-proof, and ozone leaking into the house's atmosphere is no joke at all. It can really hurt you. I have run ozone, but only at night to help keep the pH up and the water oxygenated.

Dave I'm curious which manufacturer you prefer for ozone?

The only tank I had ozone on was actually using a unit intended for swimming pools. No, I did not set that tank up, but the unit did its job just fine. I don't like to get into brand names too much as availability varies from country to country.

Spent a lot of time doing a lot of reading yesterday on ozone. For me right now, there are too many negatives to ozone over the positives. Im gonna stick with just UV for now.

Are you running a herbie with the two 2" drains or will they both be active?

So I spent all this time creating my new schematic and wouldnt you know it, it might change again. :headwally::p:cool:

Im working with the company that is creating my sump and we are going back and forth on the different options for drainage and return lines.

:lolspin:

As soon as we finalize, I will post pictures. Its going to be epic!

I totally get it. Better to work it all out before everything is glued in and wet! My wife insisted (and I agreed) on no noise. When I tune my drain line right, my tank is almost dead silent. So much so that she nixed the Gyre I bought to play with within an hour of me installing it.

No doubt no noise is my goal and the main reason I moved all my filtration to a dedicated fish room. I can totally understand why your wife wants no noise.

The other reason for my dedicated fish room is so that all the mess, smell, clutter that is typically found under a tank wont be visible in our home.

lol, holy cow that is a beauty! Congrats on getting that bad boy. Just your sump costs more than most people's entired setup.

Budget? What budget? :spin2::spin1::spin3::roll face:

Very very excited about the selection of the sump and skimmer. I think I will be very close to my desire for a clean uncluttered fish room.

Bubble King 400 Internal. We debated between the Supermarin 300 and the 500 Internal. One was a wee bit too small, and the other a wee bit too big. The 400 was just right.

Then the 3 bears came home....oh wait- wrong story.

[emoji23][emoji23]. So about those drains? I highly recommend you set it up as a herbie so you can have a silent full siphon and a measure of safety.

So my installer is going to set up the drains. Have to be honest- I've read up on the heroine/bean animal. I'm a smart guys- sort of- all that is just not making sense to me. I figure it's better to have experts on your team and tell them to set it up as a Bernie. (Whatever that is).
