1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

I thought about a divided system. It just won't look right. I'm leaning reef. Looking at all the great tangs that are out there- Naso, Achilles, etc. I'll do a reef, ad the tangs and the other critters- shrimp, crabs etc. I'll have to do without the Angels but oh well- such is life.

SPS and big angels is not the problem. Start with Montipora and fill up the tank with this. Half year later you can add very small french and bluface and or other angels. In one year your tank is full of nice corals and the angels would not destroy. I like montipora samarensis for example. You get also blue, yellow, red orange and green montipora. Don't mix them to much. Make 10 or 20 of one on one place and the next 10 or 20 the next place. Later you have very big corals. Looks really nice

Once you get the corals to a decent size, then you can try to add some juvenile angels. You've got lots of space and if the corals are big they can take the occasional nipping. I've seen a bunch of large reefs that have blueface, annularis and other large angels and the corals look phenomenal. Perhaps polyp extension will not be full, I don't know. Check with Hedgedrew... he's got a huge reef full of angels and tangs:

Pretty awesome, no?

Thanks everyone. After doing a bunch of reading last night and checking out some other big tanks, Im going to go the reef route. Initially I can add enough "swimmers" Achilles Tang, Naso Tang etc- that will give me the satisfaction of having some mobile fish.

Later on, I can evaluate if I still feel the need for some angels and add appropriately.

With regards to the next step, I need to finish up my filtration. I have a couple of reactors (carbon and GFO and pellet) that I need to install and get set up.

I need to look into calcium reactors- see if that is something I want to get involved with.

I have to still finish up my water change station. Haven't completely got that dialed in just yet.

BTW- fish this morning are doing great. Water parameters still normal. I will add some clownfish this week. Thats the initial stocking plan. After that, going to wait a few weeks and then add more.

No rush and I don't want to run into any issues. Trying to have patience with everything.

I think an awesome addition would be a Unicorn tang. That'll be a good swimmer, especially if you get a male with those beautiful streamers on its tail! (They're one of my favorite tangs lol.)

Another cool fish would be a Lieutenant Tang; love that name btw hahaha

Unicorn Tang a certain possibility. One thing is for sure - there will be multiples of each type of fish.

I'd lean towards a vlamingi as opposed to a true unicorn. I have both in my tank and while they both grow really fast, the Unicorn grows a bit quicker and isn't nearly nice looking. The vlamingi's have beautiful blue spots where as the unicorns are mostly gray. Especially when they get large. If I could do it again I would avoid the unicorn as I don't feel they are worth it for the amount of waste they produce an food they consume. They grow upwards of 8" a year and once they get large, they are very hard to find homes for. They also eat a lot. Frankly, as I much as I love my Vlamingi and even the unicorn, I am at the point that I would much prefer to have a dozen smaller fish in place of the one large fish or in the case of my vlamingi and unicorn, that same load would be equivalent to 30 smaller fish like wrasses, anthias, cardinals etc. The Unicorn and the vlamingi are extremely active almost to the point of being distractive. They can also get aggressive but due to their high speed nature (0-100 in a fraction of a second), they can also stress other fish. Also keep in mind that these tangs can get upwards of 2' long within a couple years.. Just something to think about as you will most certainly have to rehome it sooner than later.

The Lieutenant tang is a great choice. I have one and love it I also really love the Tomini tangs. They don't get terribly large and aren't aggressive either.

The fun part will be sourcing out all the fish and corals. To all the tangs above, I prefer the Achilles and Powder blue the most.

Me too but those are two of the tangs I avoid due to the fact that they are the most likely of all tangs along with the Hippo tang (Dori) to break out with ich. Too risky for my liking but I absolutely love them both and would especially love an Achilles but can't bring myself to risk my tank with one.

I've following this thread since 1 day an amazing house that you've build and the thought and attention to detail on this tank. Simply amazing.. seems like your on the right track. A reef is only way to go. Amazing house, top notch aquarium. Might as well keep the higher standard.. can't forget your taste in liquor and cars. :) another tang not mentioned yet is the white cheek tang.. the mixture of the Achilles powder blue..

Congrats on the decision to go reef. If you want angels - Bellus, Venustus, Goldflake, Regal, Bandit -- Getting these in pairs can be fantastic adds to the tank.

Before you make a Calcium Reactor decision read the reviews on the Dastaco... Perfect component for your system.

I have a pair of genicanthus watanabei angels who are gorgeous and well suited for a reef tank.

You won't have to swear off ALL angels...:)

Lovely. Of course the fish I want are the most susceptible to disease. I was avoiding yellow tangs as I understand they stress out easily. Didn't realize hippo tangs and the same issues. Oh well, there goes Keeping Dory in the tank.

Thank you Steven. I can't believe how far we have come. It's almost surreal all the planning and to now have water and fish in the tank- very exciting indeed.

Ok- will look at those angles but Blueface and French are my favorites. Regardless, we are going reef so the angles will have to take a back seat to the rest of the stuff going in.

I was just reading up on calcium reactors. what are your thoughts on doing Kalkwasser instead of a full blown reactor? i was thinking of adding Kalk to my top off tank and adding it with my top off water.

Honestly? Kalk in the ATO is a mess looking for a place to happen. Maybe a Kalk reactor would be a neater solution. That being said, I'm guessing the experts will not recommend Kalk for a tank of this size regardless. Calcium reactor for the win.

I have looked into the dosing issue and have decided to just dose with Alk/Cal/Mag.There are so many negatives to using a reactor and the only negative to dosing is the additional cost...BUT it is so simple. Our systems are complicated enough without increasing it.My last 200g was dosed and I rarely had to adjust A/K. And the Mag was just was rock steady.Apex DOS

Assuming you are quarantining or having someone else do it for you, I wouldn't worry too much about ich. As large as your tank is, I would still recommend avoiding the submarines like the vlamingi and unicorns. A pair of naso literatus would look amazing in your tank, and you should be able to have any other combo of other tangs you want, as long as they are introduced properly.
I currently have a Kole, Mimic, Lieutenant, and Naso literatus in my 360, and they get along well. I haven't decided whether I want to chance another Acanthurus like an Achilles yet, but I've been considering it for a while.
