1000 Gallon Rimless Build

Wow im very impressed so far with the build, what kinda tanks have u had in the past? any thoughts towards what you wana stock this bad boy with? ill be watching this one very closely

good to see a build with the plasma lights on it. i am considering them for a build in a year or 2 and wanted to see them in action for a while first. please keep us posted. thanks

Looking forward to updates...Would you say that the expoxy would work well for building rock structures seversl times that size? I'll be doing something similar but with much larger structures...I was originally going to go with aragonite sand based concrete to build up the rock structures and just wait out the cure in fresh water when it was finished...

I think you will be happy with the epoxy. The nice thing about this type of epoxy is you can mold it underwater if you have to.

The biggest obstacle if you are building larger structures and moving them, is the weight. The structures get very heavy fast.

The structures would be build in the tank, which will be 12x6x6...I wanted to avoid concrete if possible, so this sounds like it would be a better option for sure...

quick update the 4th Rock Structure

quick update the 4th Rock Structure

I have added a 4th rock structure to the tank. This piece gives balance to the larger Totoka piece we call "the crown of thorns". It's designed to be "cathedral" like for the fish. The structure is hollow, like a big cave with windows. The fish can go inside it to feel protected.

The fist pic is of Kevin, the owner of Warehouse Aquarium here in Atlanta. Kevin has been in the hobby for over 30 years and his experience shows in the rock work. Kevin pain stakingly built each one of the structures. He did an excellent job and I am very pleased.

A couple questions if you don't mind.

Are those the plasma lights you will be using to light the tank, and if so, do you plan on adding a 4th, and/or possibly some actinic supplementation? I do love the way the natural sunlight in the room plays such a key role in the tank. With the rimless tank it gives the feeling of the natural reefs closer to shore before you drop off to the rocky part, if you have ever been diving you know what I mean.

Are you going to do anything to camouflage those pvc pipes sticking up out of the sand. In my mind that is the only thing that breaks the illusion of being there in an otherwise flawless and stunning build.

This looks great! I am also curious about you plans for lighting. And I am also wondering about hiding the PVC! Not that itis a huge deal, but a couple choice rocks might do the trick, or even using some artificial stuff around them, and once they coralline up nobody will be the wiser!

Amazing tank so far,
Cheers.

Yes, they are the Straylight Seashine Plasmas. I will be adding a 4th (should be here next week). Also, I've been going back and forth about adding a frosted glass surround on each light to hide the fixture. I plan to cover the threaded rods and wires with stainless tubing.

I just received my Apex controller and will soon hook it up to control the dimming of the plasmas. You get a very nice blue light when the plasmas are dimmed down to 20%.

I have attached some PAR readings:

Pic 1 is on the sand bed (32 in deep tank, lights at 14" over water)
pic 2 shelf 8" off the sand bed
pic 3 peak of the rock structure, 6-8" from surface of the water

I am also experimenting with Ecoxotics Stunner Strips. I have placed one under each of the stainless steel supports. It makes for a nice effect at night. I will need more actinic supplementation during the day.

It's hard to produce a photo that shows how much impact the natural light has on the tank. It is really fantastic to what the color changes through out the day.

The returns are the biggest compromise in the system. I'm hoping when they purple up they will disappear more.
