i have 2 10000k 250w MH bulbs on my setup
needless to say the colors do NOT pop in my tank
i don't like 20000k bulbs(too dim/blue)
just curious too see if anyone has a bulb or bulb combo that is bright, yet makes the colors in your tank pop!
FYI i also have 2 96W actinic PCs in the fixture(still no color :\ )

I am running 2x250 watt phoenix 14k with 2x 54watt T-5, if you don't like the blueish hue don't run them. Myself, I love them and love the colors I am getting in my corals.

Yes I have used 13k's and 14k's and have been super happy with my 14k bulbs. Do not buy bulbs off of ebay. Personal experience says that is bad.

Reeflux 12K will be a good balance to make your coral pop and not too dark/ yellow

+1 on reeflux bulbs

Reeflux 12K is a white with a blue tint.
Reeflux 20K is a bit more blue with higher PAR.

I currently use 14k bulbs off e-bay and love em.

found this link through Melevsreef.com. Lots of pictures of various lighting options, brands with actinics and without. Bring your reading glasses and a notepad, lots of info.
I recall a page almost exactly like this one, but you could put up one picture next to another and simply click through the options to compare one next to each other, anyone know that address? Oooooor perhaps just open two windows and do it that way. :D

Some 20K's are whiter than some 14K's.
You cant just go by the K rating, it is just a rating, not the true color temp of the lamp.

The German 20K's generally are not super blue.

The Phoenix 14K is a 20K plus lamp with good par for the color. But blue and monotone to my eye. I hate them but they have good par and are very popular. Not a good choice if you dont want a bluer bulb.

If you are running SE, the Radium 20K is very popular, but expensive. One of the most highly regarded 250 watt halides for color. Pretty good par as well.

The Ushio 20K's are great bulbs as well. Not par monsters but white with blue tint ... not overwhelming blue. Quality bulbs too. Look great as standalones. Supplement with 420nm PC's and they look excellent, IMO.

The Ushio 14K actually measures close to 10K but is whiter than most 10K's as most 10K's actually measure lower than 10K.
Bulb is full spectrum with the exception of much energy in the blue range. Lots of actinic energy and some energy in the warmer spectrums. just not much in the actual blue range. You may see them as whiter/bluer (actually actinic/violet) than what you are running now depending on what 10K you are running. You can use blue PC's to add the blue. Excellent bulb, good par. But a warmer white bulb, not a cool white/blue bulb. But again, easy to supplement the blue with blue flourescents (if you have enough flourescent light).

Iwasaki 14K 250 watt DE Cool, crisp, white lamp. You might see a slight blue tint with you being used to a 10K. Good par but not a blue looking lamp. Supplements well with super actinic flourescents (or blues if you want bluer).

If you want a bluer lamp, the Helios 20K is very blue, the Phoenix 14K as mentioned ... just to name a few.

Seems like I do this every day ... just my 2 cents as usual :)

I have used XM 20K and they were way too blue and the PAR output sucked.

I switched to Phoenix 14Ks and was happier, but the PAR was still a bit low and the bulbs were still a bit too blue.

I am now running the IceCap Anthony Calfo 14K bulbs and could not be happier. They are very crisp white with a decent touch of blue (no yellow at all). The corals look wonderful and have colored up better than with any other bulb I have used.

I am running 150W DE bulbs on a BlueWave VII magnetic ballast.

One of the LFS (Elmer's in Monroeville, PA) has the 250W SE bulbs on display over a large reef. They have the 10, 14 and 20K side-by-side. I don't see much of a difference between the 14K on my tank and the 250SE on the LFS display. The difference between the 10K-14K-20K is very clear. The 10K is very white with no blue at all. The 14K has just enough blue to make me happy. I have a T5 actinic and it does help the corals pop, but I am not running it now (the controller for sunrise/sunset is not done yet).

So here is my take... Like I said, my corals have colored up better under this lamp than they did under the XM20 or the Phoenix 14K. The lamp is brighter (and I would bet higher par, but I have not measured it). The 14K phoenix did not help the color pop any more than this bulb, nor did the 20K XM to be honest. There is simply no replacement for a true actinic source. I like the phoenix bulb, but will never go back as long as these IceCap 14K are available.

No problem....

If you choose the IceCap Calfo series bulbs, I think you will be happy. Iwasaki also makes some stuff too. You will find that I don't get excited about products (I can only name a handful that I would endorse or reccomend)... These are certainly one of them. I kave to kind of laugh at how bad the XMs were.
