Roger I purchased this pump in the spring of 2014 to use as a submersible return. While it works fine, it is annoyingly loud. It is louder than my genx 40 pump running my skimmer. I took it apart to see if it needed cleaning and other than some bio film it was clean. Is this unit known for 'humming'? Not what I expected for a Tunze pump

It is relatively quiet for the volume of 2900 gph compared to equivalently sized pumps, but it is not silent. High flow pumps have a large rotating mass and make more vibration and noise. The keys to keeping that as low as possible will be not restricting the flow, if using smaller pipe it takes 3 1" pipes to equal 1 1.5". Be sure to avoid hard surface contact, avoid direct connection of hard pipe, use tubing between the pump and pipe, use the rubber feet and make sure the sides of the pump are not in contact with a hard surface.
