10g tank

My son is wanting to have his "own" tank. We have an extra 10g tank lying around. I know I would need a filter, light, sand and live rock.

Any suggestions as whether I should do a tank this small?

He could do a small softie tank and get by with like a 96W 24 inch PC light with maybe 1-2 small fish (a clown, a small goby, etc). This wouldn't be too $$ to set up. Get about 15 pounds of LR or so, 2-3 inch sand bed, heater, lights. A small HOB filter would be fine, as long as it is cleaned properly, and water changes are done weekly to bi-weekly.

Tanks are great for kids IMO, if they are willing to take care of them.

I would say go for it!

I have a 10g that is very enjoyable. (freshwater)

I'm still a noob but I can say this tank is pretty easy to maintain, and you can have some cool fish in it.

I have two really big goldfish and some tetras in there. I upgraded to a 20g filter and it does the job. I'm not sure if this is recommended, but it seems to be ok.

ok im come from the land of nanos...
1st... with the 96w you could keep low light sps too
2nd... hob wont be enough a small powerhead would do it
3rd... nanos are awsome
