118g Tank Project

Quick update ! The stand & canopy is almost done. Next weekend I'm going to sand it down and the weekend after I'm applying the stains. Should be done before the end of July ! :D Also, I want to re-inforce the interior of the stand, because the tank is heavy !! Here's some pics for your pleasure:

Sorry, no new updates yet.

Things are going very slow...I should start the staining of the stand soon, because I fall on vacation in 2 weeks :)

Wow Ginzo! You're going to have one sweet looking tank and stand. The time and planning you've put into it so far is amazing. I'm too impulsive and too lazy to do anything so custom. Can't wait to see it wet and living!!!

Well, slow progress...but it's coming along.

Just wondering what you guys though about having a third Metal Halide pendant in the middle (see red circle):

I was thinking of putting another Giesemann Nova II in the middle, but a 250 watts DE HQI 14 000k instead of a 150 watts DE HQI 13 000k like the other two side ones.

Would the 250 watts be too much for my corals ? I've heard complaints of burning ? Also, not much high inside my canopy, about 9.75 inch, so the lights will be close to the surface of the water. My tank is 25" high.

What do you guys think, should I go with another 150 watts or go for the 250 watts ?

Ginzo,
Just found your thread. Great woodworking. Love it!!!
A couple of questions:
Did you ever solve your hood lift problem? If so, how?
What is the graphic/CAD program you use... Looks real nice.
Thanks

Geoff

Hi gws294,

Thanks, I love the woodwork also, it's going to look great when it's completely assembled.

I haven't resolved the hood/lift problem, but I've been thinking lately about it. I'll let you know soon if I find something.

The CAD program is Microsoft Inventor. It's a great program for design! But I would go with Sketchup from Google because it's more user friendly.

Thanks again !

Awesome stand. I would like to build one that intricate some time.

Just a word of warning. You might think about taking the tank off the plastic saw horses. I know a guy that lost a brand new tank b/c one of the plastic saw horse legs gave out.

Well I worked on my stand on the weekend :)

Everything is slowly fitting into place.

Here's some pictures for your pleasure (the tank was a little frosty, since it's been in the garage and it was cold in there !):
