120 Gallon Setup Has Begun

Thanks Nanogurl!

I recently acquired some new frags from Copps. Great seller. I highly recommend buying from him.

I finally got the sunset monti I was wanting

I also got an Idaho Grape Monti, green plating monti, blue tip stag and mimic pink lemonade

My rainbow monti is encrusting well as is the superman.

Thanks again. My calcium is running a little low right now, even with the reactor (320). I need to raise it to 400 and adjust the reactor to maintain this level.

Magnesium is also a little low at 1150 so I'll raise it as well. Placed an order for supplements. Just waiting on them to come in now.

I'm hoping to get better color once I get all levels in check.

WOW....just read this whole thread makes me really miss my 120 Long. I hope to see it in person tomorrow. Now I'm off to read the stand build thread.....lol.

Awesome build! I noticed in the last pic's of your bar (1 pg back) that it's really a water testing station more than a bar,,,,,,,,Salifert boxes on the counter gave it away :)

happy new year

Right now I have a terrible thing happening in my tank that I can't find a solution to. I am experiencing tissue loss on many of my sps corals. I have this thread going in the sps forum to try and figure out what is causing it.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1320804

All water params check out fine. I notice today that the sps frags I have growing in my sump are not experiencing the loss of tissue. That leads me to believe there is a pest only in my display causing the issue. The only possible culprits are two emerald crabs. I do not have any hermits in my system. I have never witnessed the emeralds munching on the corals but who knows. I'm at a complete loss as to why this is happening.

Today I shortened my photoperiod to 8 hrs/day and I am increasing the feedings. This was advice taken from other hobbyist that noticed my sps colors are light and faded.

Thanks

I had this happen to me as well. Very frusterating. Please check and double check your Ca, Alk, and pH levels. Also be sure that you have your Mg level correct. It will help keep your Ca and Alk levels high without the two binding and falling out of the water as a precipitate (white powder).
Good luck.

Thanks. I have checked all levels with different test kits and get similar results. Since only acropora corals are affected, I believe my water parameters are fine (they test fine as well). All other inhabitants including clams, monti caps, monti digi, zoas, leathers, ricordia, fish, snails, etc. are growing and doing great.

Doubldoor- I use 3 different 300 watt heaters on my system. I will have to check the brands. I use multiple heaters because it lessens the chance of a catastrophe if one fails. Plus 200 gallons of water takes a lot to heat in my basement.

DoubleDoor, I've had good luck with an Aqua Medic Biotherm Titanium Heating Element for my heater. You will need a controller for it but you can't beat titanium heaters.

Would it be outta line to ask for some recent pics?

BTW, would you you change your 10k MHs to 14k? Just curious as I am getting close to lighting mine up.

I'll have to take some recent pictures. I'm still experiencing the acro problem described above so I haven't added anything new to the tank. Just letting this ride its course to see what happens.

I changed from 10K to Reeflux 12K bulbs about a year ago. I little bluer but I've grown to like them.

AMAZING thread! Thanks for putting your hobby out in the open for others to learn from. Just curious, is there a good LFS in Cape G, or do you buy almost everything online? Thanks.

There is really only one LFS left in Cape. They are also a plant nursery so summer is very slow on their salt water supply. They usually have a good fish selection but limited on corals. I buy what I can from them but buy most of my stuff in St. Louis.

Here are a few pics from today. Sorry for the dirty glass.

Here is my green slimer. Still having the acro problems described earlier but the tissue loss has slowed dramatically. I can even see new growth over the exposed skeleton in some areas.

For now I have decided to just let it ride its course. Hopefully it will subside soon and I can add new stuff.

I have experienced a slight outbreak of algae. I stopped running Phosguard as I read it may leach stuff into the water. I thought maybe it was the cause of the coral loss. But all other corals are doing great.

Marino, that stand is unbelievable. I like to DIY but it ain't nothing like that! Tank is awsome as well! Hopefully we can get together some time and do some trading. A RBTA would look nice in there and the clown would love it..... (I have 4) to get rid of!
