Hey everyone Im Smitty nice to meet some of u. Ive finally started my 72"x18"x22" 120 gallon AGA RR. Ive had 90's, 55's and most recently setup another 90 until my leak test blew out a side panel causing $1000's damage to my house . But my OCD has prevailed and I just happened to have the 120 in my basement (which ironically caught the majority of the water from the 90). My plan for the tank is a diverse reef consisting of SPS, LPS, softies, clams, inverts,FISH!!! (important cause the gf loves em and in turn takes some heat off me) I am a diver and just love seeing the diversity when I dive so I wanna recreate that in my home as best I can. I plan on using MH/T5HO lighting, diverse flow, a remote sump/fish room and as much DIY as I can handle. Me and a buddy already started the stand its constructed of 2x4's and 2x6's and is in the process of being skinned with maple ply and solid maple trim and stock. Ill have pics soon cause my camera is broken (gf dropped it in the snow).

Equipment List:

Outer Orbitz 3x250HQI/8x39T5HO
2- Vortech MP40W
Sequence Reeflo Marlin return pump
Lifereef SVS2-24 skimmer 250g capacity
Filter Guys 75GPD RO/DI unit
100gallon Rubbermaid stock tank w/ new schd80 bulkhead for sump
50gallon Rubbermaid stock tank w/ new sch80 bulkhead for fuge
Some sort of CFL lighting for the fuge
RK2 or RKL not sure I love the blue backlit screen and the RKL doesnt have it?
Calcium reactor in the future

Any comments or suggestion as far as equipment choice thus far would be appreciated I wanna do this right the first time.

Setup:

The DT will be upstairs in a room off the kitchen(pics soon) kinda like a dining/sunroom of sorts. I have to support the floor underneath cause the tank rests about 16" from where the floor joist meet the main support, the floor joists are nailed to the front of the support beam without Tico hangers. I planned on installing joist hangers and 4x4 posts from the bottom of the FJ to the crawlspace floor directly under the cenrer line of the tank, it should be enough I think but LMK if you think differently. 2 1" returns from my MegaFlow overflow will gravity drain into a 1 1/2" PVC DWV Y, BV's on each side to throttle flow from the DT instead of the sump room. The 1 1/2" line will than drain into my 50gallon Fuge feeding excess nutrients and food to the Fuge. The Fuge will than overflow into my 100gallon sump where the skimmer, heater, and probes will be located. My Marlin pump will than pump the return water to my DT w/ valves under the DT to control flow. If anyone has suggestions or a better setup design its greatly appreciated I tend to over analyze things and have gone over this part in my head a 1000 times or so. I plan on having 2 40 gallon Brute containers for RO/DI storage and mix water for WC's. A gravity fed ATO will keep evap water in check.

So thats the jist of it pics to come soon Please feel free to help out if youd like I value everyone's opinions on RC and look forward to working w/ you on this build. One catch, were expecting our first on Aug 11th to be exact so I wanna have this thing up and running by April the latest, time for a safe cycle, and maybe a little stocking of the DT, cause once the little one comes Im sure reef spending will be impeaded a bit Stay tuned for updates planning on readying the sump room today Ill post pics

Heres the stand I built made of 2x4 and 2x6 framing covered in 3/4" maple ply and maple trim, The camera makes the stain look dark and blotchy but it doesnt look like this in person

Heres some of the foam rock wall Ive made for the back of the tank

I foamed them and sanded them Ill post picks, sump room is somewhat ready to start piping Ill post pics of that as well

Wow thanks for the kind words sorry Ive been away awhile (work is actually busy, everyone needs water) but again thanks it took a while to do Ive never built anything like this so it was a "Learning Experience" to say the least. I have some of the sump room ready to go and Im going to pipe it in the next couple minutes actually. Im still trying to decide if I want to go with the foam rock wall or not, I have the pieces all done but just cant pull the trigger on it. Maybe Ill post some pics and let u guys/girls decide. Ill take pics today as I proceed with the piping its gonna take awhile when it comes to piping Im a perfectionist its bad sometimes. I plan on using to 40 gallon rubbermaid brute containers the grey ones for my RO/DI storage in one and salt mix for changes in the other. I want to connect the 2 using bulkheads on the bottom with a ball valve in between this way the RODI fills both barrels and than I can close the valve and add salt to one as needed. Im concerned with drilling the round brute containers and installing the bulkheads it just seems like theyre gonna leak cause the walss are rounded, has anyone done this before if so did they hold up? Anyway Im off to the supply house for some pipe and fittings Ill be back soon and Ill post pics. Enjoy the weekend

whats the height difference from sump to DT?

Im in the middle of a similar build and am pump curious. I've found that the one i went with (reeflo barricuda) causes a ton of vibration noise with my 100g stock tank AND pvc return pipe.

Looks like you are definately on the right track thus far

Exotic its 1 1/2" inlet and 3/4" outlet that I increased to 1 1/2" the pump is a Reeflo Marlin it comes with the 3/4" female thread output. Monty my DT is on the first floor of my house, vertically its 11' horizontally its about 20' Its a total headloss of 15' or so can't remember really. I also ran 1 1/2" pipe for my overflow and return so every 90 and bend doesn't cause additional head loss. I went with the Marlin even though it was way more than I needed cause an oversized pump throttled back (on the output) is better for u and the pump. The pump is attached to the stock tank with Spa Flex to help eliminate vibration also I have a rubber mat under the stock tankm. Its also very important to strap and secure your piping.

nice work.

this is my first experience with a remote sump and stock tanks, so its nice to see what other people are doing too. Our setups are similar. I have a 4'120g, about 12' vertical and 6' horizontal. I put a plywood cover over the stock tank connected to my return pump which muffled the vibration substantially. I've undone the pvc clamps that i had in a few places, as the vibration was transferring right to the floor, even with a rubber mat. Im trying to find some sort of pad i can rap around the pvc to contain some of the vibration noise.

Your setup is a lot prettier than mine, keep the pics coming! I look forward to bouncing more ideas back and fourth.

Monty we use this stuff sometimes in houses to muffle the sound of water in parts of houses, it works very well and its not to expensive. Def look forward to bouncing stuff off you its my first remote sump room as well

Hahahahhahaha sorry man didn't paste the link it was a long day. Its called reflextix insulation HVAC guys use it to wrap ductwork. You can get it at home depot
