I take it the wall your opening isn't load bearing???? I honestly would open the wall completely in the area your working from behind and start your framing from there.......I would work the area above putting in a header and stud down from there and not put and stud work in front of the tank until your sure of it's exact placement.......I'm assuming you want the tank to sit flush with the finished wall on the viewing side?
