120g Pics (Dial-Up Beware)

I kept one for years on CC stars, used to keep it in the aquarium and cut off a leg on occasion until the shrimp found the "mother lode". Even froze one once and fed frozen pieces to it, but it fouled the water quickly. The one I've got now is eating the asterinas which I harvest out of the main tank for it. I've seen it eating them at night, so I know they're getting eradicated.

If I'm not mistaken, the Randall's at CR was paired with a Yashe goby, so they may only sell it as a pair. You'd just have to ask. Of course, it was a quick glance and I could be wrong...

Tomoko~ Nah, I got it up in CT... I'm looking for some females or juvi's now... Either McCoskers, Carpenters, or Filamented... May have to wait till I go back to CT or I might order them on-line or through one of my LFS...

Thanks.

An LFS here ordered Carpenteri for me. Two of them came in right away and the shop sold one before I got there. They supposedly reserved a better looking one for me, but it appears to have a tiny filmy spot on the caudal pedancle. Otherwise he is very pretty and healthy looking. He is still reddish but he is a full 3" specimen. The shop is treating the fish for me right now. The shop wants $34.99 for it. Not a bad deal since the shop is pretty much QT'ing the fish for me :)

I would like to get a McCoskers and Filamented as well. I am hoping that the same shop can get hold of those for me, too. Otherwise I have to go online, too.

Watch the resparation of the fish... I've found thats the best indicator of these wrasses... Oh and while their swimming they should appear more like a hummingbird with their fins constantly going, but not really moving... If their moving irratically while they're moving, you obviously want to stear clear of them... I wouldn't worry too much about the filmy spot, especially if it was just moved before you saw it... Like many other wrasses, they'll secrete a film and play dead when agitated... I thought mine might have gone through too much stress when I brought him down, but a day and a half later he was swimming around the tank being the stud he is flaring his fins at my angel and tang... lol :D

Thank you very much for the info on the film. I was not sure what that was when I saw it, but now that you mentioned it, it sure looked like slime.

I will watch him really closely the next time I go to the LFS. I saw the fish acting pretty normal, no fast respiration or anything, but I did not see it doing a hummingbird thing. Hopefully he will be coming home with me soon.

By the way, do you know how to tell carpenteri male from female?

Tomoko

The males have the "spikes" on their dorsal fins... Where as the females and the Juvis do not... If you get a full assortment of females and juvis the dominant one will eventually become a male... Kinda like Anthias...

Fairy & Rainbow Wrasses and their relatives by Rudie H. Kuiter is a good reference source... Plus some pretty pics... :D

Thank you. The fish that the LFS is holding for me is definitely a male then.

I would like to get some dialogs going with Dr. Tanaka.

When I was growing up in Kobe, Japan, my father used to bring home a lot of wrasses he caught in the Inland Sea. We used to feast on these beautiful things. They were generally 12 inches or so and brightly colored - mainly red or green striped.

I read in one of Japanese reefers/fish keeper's sites that fisherman often throwed those smaller wrasses (the brightly colored ornamental ones we love) away because they are too small to sell for food market.

Its good that they got you a male... Most online stores only sell juvis... So this will save you some time building a harem... :) If you have a large enough tank, you can get a second male and then the flashing begins, as they compete and display for the females... Thats my goal...

Oh, and in Hawaii, we just used the smaller fish for soup... lol ;) But that was back when I could afford to go... Since my parents were paying... :D

A Hawaian wrasse soup? That sounds good.

I will put my male carpenteri in my 120G. I suppose I can have another male or build a harem with a couple of females. I would not mind having just males, though. A McCosker male would be really nice.

Tomoko

Oh they weren't wrasses... Or at least not all of them... Just tiny fish... lol

Having more than 2 or maybe 3 males might prove difficult... They are peaceful as far as wrasses go, but they can get territorial... And the only reason to keep the females is so that the males display and flash for them... Something to keep in mind... ;) You know how we males like to strut for our women folk... :D

Thank you for the info. Wrasses seem more and more like my fresh water dwarf cichlids, apistogramma. Peaceful, but territorial and likes his harem :D If only we could breed these beauties...

Tomoko

Tomoko, you need to watch those wrasses changing from female to male too though, which can cause some territory issues. Make sure the top on the tank is tight fitting, without ANY holes at all, because they WILL find a way out of the tank.

I used to keep some Apistos as well...no freshwater right now, but I had a couple nice pair of some A. hongsloi and my favorite Apistogrammoides pucallpaensis...ah, the good ol' days!

Thanks, Fred.

No hole at all? Not even an egg crate type cover? I rigged up a frame with egg crate and stretched a bird netting material over the frame.

Tomoko

If they can phyically fit through, expect them to find any hole available. I had a gorgeous Lubbock's wrasse for about 8 months in my old seahorse tank, and one day he just found the small slit (no more than 3/4" wide by 1" deep) near the filter and made his way out.

I won't be able to make the swap Randy. I got a lot going on right now. Working a lot of hours, the new daughter ( well she's 3 months now, but still feels new!) and the new tank I just can't seem to catch up. That's why I've been "hiding" well lurking might better describe it!! I hope things will be calming down soon! I'm waiting for a meeting to be at your house!! So we can do what we do best

Your av rocks!! What are those? Are they some of the zoas you got from that guy after working on his horses?

Patrick~ Thanks... Yeah, thats what they are... ;) Later determined them to be the Pink Elephants sold on fraggle reef after I worked a trade with Miguel and ended up with another frag of them... LMAO Oh well... You'll have to scam on Brandon for a frag after his grow out... But at least it will be closer for you to gauk at...

Glad your family is doing well though... And thats a better excuse than any for not coming to the frag swap... For some reason I've been all baby crazy... I think its cause one of my friends is pregnant and due about the same time Ashley and I are getting married... But we aren't planning on any addition for a few years... :)

Anyways, if you need any help with your new tank, just holler... You should come up for the meeting at Mel's if you get a minute... Had too good of a time at the last one... lol

Each opening is close to a 3/4" square. I can double the bird netting if necessary to make it more like 3/8". The black plastic lines (like a 8 lbs test fishing line) are so thin that I don't think they will affect the lighting.
