Open as in with a considerable amount of negative space so that you can keep low light demanding corals on the sand and the fish have ample space to swim.
 
I also have a vertex skimmer and to raise it, I used an Ikea plastic cutting board and some pvc legs. It made a cheap but stable base that allows good circulation and is easy to clean. Also I found my "24 hour" break in period for the skimmer took closer to 2 weeks. Overall I like the skimmer though. It is very quiet.

That's awesome glad to hear that. And yeah mine still has microbubbles galore coming out of it.
 
Looking very nice. I myself like the 120g tanks. Plenty of room for the fish to swim around in. Your whole setup is very nice.
