135 DSA Tank Build - My first tank!

Looks good SC, what did you end up going with I forgot?

Most all of my equipment gets here today and my DIY LEDs are in today or tomorrow as well. I'll have a busy weekend!

Lookin good man, you're about 2 days ahead of me, maybe 2 days. Mine sat with water in it all day. I'll finish installing my 1262 this morning then test the return piping, after that it's drain water, add sand and rocks time. Looking good though man.

Thanks - hoping to get actual saltwater in it today!! Hope you have no leaks to deal with!

Used a combo of BRS and Marco Rocks

Used a combo of BRS and Marco Rocks

So in the end I decided to use all dry rock for the tank for a couple reasons.

1. Nothing unwanted in tank
2. Live rock cost adds up QUICKLY! - just like anything else, BRS ships FREE (if on a > 175$ order). Just shipping alone saved me a couple hundred over live rock!
3. Dry rock not time sensitive, so it can sit around and wait for me to have time to work!
4. Cut Marco rocks allow for lots of flat areas (hopefully great for frags in the future...)

130 lbs of BRS dry rock and 20 lbs of Marco Rocks prime cut - mixed pieces of some cut flat on both sides, others on only 1 side.

Here's how rocks came (Marco box on far R):

Both were well packed:

Only a small bit of rubble from shipping:

Here's what 120 lbs of BRS reef save rocks comes out to be:

The Marco cut rocks in foreground. REALLY glad I got these - opened up MANY more possibilities for aquascape than just using all round rocks...

I followed BRS instructions and let the rocks sit in some plain water for about a week...

I had heard rumors of rocks leaking phosphates...will have to wait till they're in my tank to be sure I guess, but this water tested negative for phosphates (even some I left for 5 weeks was still negative - is not saltwater, so maybe that doesn't count..?)

Finally, put up a template of tank dimensions and after a few tries (with A LOT of help from a friend who has had tanks before), ended up with this:

Wasn't really what I was after. I have to admit, maybe I'm not very creative, but it as a LOT herder to assemble the rocks into something we liked than I thought it would be...

Having the tank outline was VERY useful. In the end after a few more got this:

You can never exactly re-create an aquascape I think, so even moving it inside it morphed into something a little different...but I 'm pretty happy with the end result!

Had about 5 larger BRS rocks (30 lbs..?) left over afterwards too. Stuff is pretty light IMO, and glad I stuck with the ~ 1 lb per gal rule or I would have had a LOT more sitting around now...

I love my macrorocks. You finally inspired me to update my thread while my tank is draining. Time to head out and start rinsing all this sand :(

I've already got my sump filled with RO/DI, tank has about 20 gallons in it. You're slackin :P

You have a leg up on me though, since I decided to skin my stand I decided to wait until after I had things setup so my stand isn't as complete as yours.

My stand has been the looooongest step so far! Took like 3 months for someone to build, but I'm happy with the result...they did a great job!

Wow. Did you buy all those jugs? Pre-mixed salt water or RO/DI? Pretty cool, it took me 3 days to make enough RO/DI and mix it to fill my tank.

I know you're starting to get excited!

Have fun... I have the DSA 135g as well... Sadly it took them 6 months to get it to me. But I did request Starphire on the front. I see you went with black silicone. Kind of wish I have.

I have an obvious "degassing" line on the silicone on the front. It's cosmetic.... But still annoying...

I have a build thread in a different forum. I'll have to get one up here in RC.
