Clay came over last night and we did a little rearranging.
These Paly's are sick. I bought them as a camo green but the more light they get the more blue they get. I dig em'.
:wavehand:
God bless radiums! If you ever decide you want to upgrade your light... all you need to do is get an ANSI M81 Spec Magnetic Ballast, must be the ANSI M81, which is what radiums are designed to run on (well at least the 150w and 250w) actually all DE bulbs are meant to run on an M81 (for 150w) or M80 (for 250w) magnetic ballast, which actually seriously "overdrives" the bulbs, actually it's more like e-ballasts really underdrive them... DE bulbs are meant to run at higher wattage than the displayed wattage, so a 150w DE bulb is actually something like ~190 watts... Which is why they have gotten better par numbers than similar 175w SE mogul lamps.
It's odd that everyone is moving to DE bulbs it seems, and yet they are also moving to E-ballasts... the two are not designed to really run together, not that they don't still look great, but you generally aren't getting the full spectrum from the bulb, not to mention you are actually shortening the lifespan of the bulb, particularly radiums, as they require an ignitor, and without one they take a while to kick on with an eballast, this shortens the lifespan of the bulb considerably... and it shifts the spectrum and weakens output by about ~18.8% according to sanjay.
The 150w runs at 47 par on m81 mag ballast, something like 39 par on a top of the line eballast, and 36 par on a regular eballast (icecap i believe) so up to a 24% par reduction... but this is gonna heat your tank up more, and you may actually run into bleaching issues, tho bleaching is uncommon with 20k bulbs as well as less common for mh vs. fluoros.
The radium bulbs burn MUCH brighter (actually outclass many 14k & a few 10k bulbs, and EVERY 20k bulb) and even outclasses some 250w bulbs on an M81 magnetic ballast.
The look is less blue, the blue peak is just as strong with the mag ballast, but you get a stronger green, and orange peaks... and a little more yellow & red for accurate color rendering and enhanced par.
20k radium on mag ballast is a par monster!! Looks pure white and beautiful, I recommend the upgrade, PFO makes a great HQI ballast.
Loving your office nano, aren't nano's fun? Purple firefish would be beautiful in that beast, or a helfrichi... they make great nano fish as they tend to sit still, but are always out in the water column for your viewing pleasure...
I had a regular red firefish goby back in the day... I thought he was cool, but he got annoying, always flicking that long fin, I got tired of his coloration.
Then I found a purple firefish at my LFS, and had to have him, took him home, popped him under my radium... OMG... gorgeous fish.
That or a swissguard basslet, or a yasha goby... all excellent sexy nano fish.
PS I love your taste in equipment, design, construction, and corals. is that a gorgonian?
BIG FAN of german engineering, EHEIM AND RADIUM all the way.
I hope the goniopora turns out well, they are tough to keep... I got one and it's tricky but a cool coral nonetheless.
