Got it setup and am expecting one of my mantis, pseudosquilla ciliata, to come in tomorrow morning. Here are some pics.

I'm expecting my LFS to get me in a smasher just because that's what I'm hoping for :). Questions/comments/criticism all welcome.

Looks better than I expected. Nice job. I would double layer the divider for the sake of safety if you are getting a peacock. I assume the the holes are too small for a mantis to squeeze through.

Thanks!it is double layered :). I have 2 of them on eachother and I place it do that they overlap making the squares smaller. A Peacock would be nice, But I'm not very picky, just would like to have a smasher and spearer. I haven't seen how large the Pseudosquilla Ciliata is yet, I HOPE he can't fit through there Or I may have to move him to a different tank.

Why do so many people go for egg crate rather than acrylic? It seems to me like water flow between the two could be acieved witha few slots and a power head, and thatthe mantises know full well that they have a neighbor from the smell.

because the acrylic I was looking at was a good 30$per sheet and was thin. On my budget that's wayy too expensive right now. The eggcrate was a mere 8$ per, so that fit me better. I don't see a problem in better water flow, even if they can "sense" eachother I don't think they are that aggressive to go provoke eachother.

P.Ciliata will arrive tomorrow. hopefully my LFS will have gotten a mantis in so I will have them both. More pics will be up after mantis arrives.

Wow. LFS didn't have a mantis for me, and Fedex either lost my package or delievered it to the wrong address.... I emailed them and haven't gotten a response yet. Hope the little guy is still doing fine.

Couldn't get a positive ID on male or female. I'm guessing female because I didn't see any "sticks". Just put him in the tank and he is chillin for now.

He is doing great so far, of course he takes a liking to some other rock instead of the pvc I put in for him. It was either the stripe or a bright orange one. I like the stripe more.:)

just wondering on what kind of smasher you're hoping to get, because i know that egg-crate is pretty brittle and if the smasher wants, it probably wouldn't be to hard to get through it, just a concern i had

Yes, that was also a concern of mine when I bought it and actually saw how easy it is to break. I don't have any species in mind, just something atleast 3-4". My P.Ciliata so far has just walked along the eggcrate, tried to get through at one part, but quickly just kept exploring. I'm hoping that the smasher does the same and isn't interested in what lays beyond the eggcrate wall. Hopefully my LFS will get the smasher in tomorrow.

Yeah I must agree that if the mantis ever inteneded to break on through to the other side it would have no difficulty at all, even with 2 layers.

To help the eggcrate survive you may try putting a layer of gutterguard on the smasher side. Its a rubbery mesh material sold at hardware stores cheap, usually dark brown and about 5-6" wide sold in a long role. It will keep the holes smaller, and possibly give the eggcrate a safety cushion from the smasher if he gets fiesty. I dont know for sure but im thinking it will be harder for the smasher to get a good hit with the rubbery material to bounce off of..... at least I hope it will work cause thats what im planning. keep us posted:)

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy some quikcrete hydralic water stop cement, add equal parts sand, CC, or oyster shells and water. Mix and add it to the eggcrete. Let it dry for a few days and then put it in for the divider. For better flow cut some random holes in the eggcrete before adding the cement. It will color up pretty quickly and will look very natural.

P.Ciliata is still doing fine. He's been exploring the tank alot more lately. Made alot of tunnels through the rocks, alot more than any other mantis i've had has. Still haven't gotten a mantis for the other side yet though.

You could get a O. havenensis from that ken guy in Florida. It would be like a biotope. P. ciliata and o. havenensis both come from Florida (P. ciliata comes from alot of places, but Florida too) Just a thought.....

Yes, I was actually hoping for a S.Rugosa (also species from florida) but haven't found any for sale anywhere. Who's this guy, and how can I contact him?
