180 flow choices

For background here's my system in a nutshell:

I have a 110 frag tank, 45 frag, 110 stock tank sump in my fish room. On the living area side of my fish room I have a 90 g AGA display. In that display I have a mjmod high flows on one side, and a couple seio 1500's on a controller on the other.

I just bought an Oceanic 180 gallon tank. It has 2 corner overflows with what I believe is a 1-1/4" and a 3/4" bulkhead in each one. I'm trying to figure out how to get my turnover in this tank.

1. Should I drive this tank up to a glass shop and have a couple 1-1/2 intakes for a closed loop to return via manifold. Then use the two holes in each bulkhead for thier original drain/return use.

2 Go ahead and use powerheads instead of closed loop thus reducing risk of losing the tank to breakage. A possible extra bonus to this method is that my Aquacontroller3 is due to come out with tunze control as either an updated firmware or hardware add on. Also if those vortec's come out with a controller that could be a very low profile way to get massive flow. And, if I go w/powerheads, will the overall health of my sps corals require I add more of them or is 7-8000 gph still good in a larger tank due to changed flow dynamics. I know I get some help at least in this because rarely do I hear of a 200 gallon tank having 20,000 gph turnover (100X) although I'm sure there are some.

3. Use the 2 3/4" return pipes bulkheads as a closed loop intake for a pump that wants a 1" intake. I don't mean that I'd use the overflow chamber itself but instead I could take it halfway up the overflow to a 90 degree turn and bulkhead it through the overflow wall. I can handle cutting the acrylic hole but I don't think I'd want totdo the glass in #1 above.

I would go with powerheads if I were in your shoes. Except I would go with vortech pumps and use the controller they are coming out with soon instead of big ugly tunze pumps. I have a vortech and its the coolest peice of equipment I've bought yet and it looks SO much better than the tunzes would have and the flow is incredible.

you can do either

there is down falls to both methods

closed loop is nice

power heads are nice

it comes down to what you want to do with the tank
