ok i am going to be setting up a 180 gallon reef in a couple of weeks and i have just recently started to think about some fish to put in. Right now i have two percula clowns and a algae blenny. I also have 3 bangai cardinals. I will be adding all those fish for sure. The fish list i was thinking of consists of:
4-6 green chromis
2-3 wrasses of some kind need advice must be reef safe
scopas tang
orange shoulder tang and possibly another tang
I am open to any help as of what fish to add or what fish not to add. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you Dustin

I've always read that schooling fish should be in odd numbers, not too sure on this, maybe someone else will chime in on it, good luck with your 180g, I'm gunna be starting up a 180g FOWLR sometime this summer.

Good Luck,
Steve

I have the same idea, Steve...but I've got no idea where I heard it or the reasoning behind it.

ok i think i remeber hearing that. I will try to research it. Does anything sound bad or crazy or does it seem pretty realistic?

Whereas Wrasses go, what type do you like? Flasher Wrasses, Fairy Wrasses?

I"d put these in, if I was stocking a reef:

McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
Longfin Fairy Wrasse

Have you looked into Anthias instead of Chromis? They don't really school but they stick together (well, from my experiences anyway) and are much more colorful.

With the tangs, just make sure they aren't of the same genus.

Maybe try some bottom dwelling fish like gobies? Or how about a Blenny? I have my Hawkfish in my Reef and he's a real laugh, hasn't bothered any of my shrimp, snails, or crabs, but it's Hit or Miss with them.

If I were you I'd stock it like this:

McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
Longfin Fairy Wrasse
Starry Blenny
Yasha Hase Goby w/Pistol Shrimp (Dunno about these with Hawkfish, seeing as how they are in their burrows I don't think it would be a problem.
Powder Blue Tang or another of your liking I just love them
Flame Hawkfish
Clownfish-I Suggest True Percs (I would never have a tank without them, they're awesome)
Royal Gramma
Lastly either a Wanatabei or Bellus Angel (ReefSafe)

Good Luck and Happy Reefing,
Steve

chromis wont' school in a tank that size, and they will likely kill each other off till there's only one left.

i also wouldn't put a goby/shrimp pair in there, as you'll likely never see them. they really do best in smaller tanks.

I haver had 4 Chromis in my tanks for over 1 year. They are great and school together 50% of the time...

I just saw a really nice deal on a purple tang sio i think i will switch that with the scopas tang. Does that sound good?

Same here, except mine school together 95% of the time, if not always. Maybe the clownfish swimming around, being from the same family constitutes 5? Whatever it is, they're fine in my 120.

I love my Purple Tang! I have a 220g, which is just 6" taller version of the 180. When I bought it, it was a running system, and I bought the Purple and a Yellow Tang from it...put them in another tank temporarily. Anyway, the point of all that...they have been together for about 6 weeks in my tank and however long they were in there before, and they get along fine.

I also have a Hippo/Regal Tang and I'm planning to add a Orange Shoulder or Powder Blue..not sure yet.

I have a pair of True Percs as well. Love them!

As for the Chromis discussion, I agree. Anthias are by far more colorful. I'm planning on a trio of Bartlett's or Lyretails.

here's my total stock list so far, if this helps:

Yellow Tang
Purple Tang
Blue Hippo Tang
Two Barred/Masked Rabbitfish
Percula Clown Pair
Yellow Tail Damsel
Yellow Watchman Goby
Cleaner Shrimp x 4

The point of that whole first paragraph was SUPPOSED to be....if you want the Purple Tang, but you want other Zebrasoma tangs, get them at the same time and about the same size.

ok so a fw fish i am getting for sure are a red sea purple tang, green mandarin goby and a wrasse that i forget the name of. I will find out and update it
