1800 Gallon Reef .... Houston, Tx

We decided to go with 3 1000 watt halides instead of 8 400 watt halides. We are actually going to save money when you add up the power consumption and bulb replacements. We may be adding an assortment of LED lighting as well for the sunrise/sunset and lunar cycle. The halides will run 6 hours each if that is the case. All three will run for mid day sun. If we go with LED for supplemental lighting we will use the vertex illumina.

I had the aquarium builder add 1" deep counter sunk wholes in the end of the aquarium so that we could use the vortec mp60's. The thickness of the glass is only 1 inch where the vortecs will be.

Is this something that has been tried and true on tanks this size? They seem kinda close together but I'm sure you all have everything covered. Just curious is all.

The reason for them to be on one side is because the return lines will be coming into the other end of the aquarium. Also it is a three sides viewable pinisula tank so adding them to the short viewing panel was not an option.

The total flow in the main tank is as follows.

The Return pump is a ReeFlo Goby Gold 4500GPH
The MP60WES pumps 7500 GPH Each
The closed loop is run with a ReeFlo Hammerhead Gold 5500GPH

The MP60 will be running on Reefcrest mode and will be set to alternate between the left and right sides. The goal is to creat random flow as mush as possible.

Sorry for the confusing question.

I was refering to the thinned/shaved walls where the vortechs will be inset. Just seems like a lot of pressure to have the thinned sections so close together. Like I said I'm sure you all have made sure all is well but was just curious about the limits of the tank. Have you seen this done before or has the builder done it before?

They will def work great where they are located for sure as I love the pumps and what they can do! They will do great with the other rock work plumbing! Shouldnt be hardly any dead spots at all.

Yeah I asked the engineer if it could be done, and he said that a 1" countersink would be ok. The end panels are 2" thick and he said that it wouldn't be an issue adding the counter sunk wholes as they are placed.

amazing build :)

the rock work around the return pipe scares me though in general ... with the added weight of rocks, all being carries to the bottom glass ...

quite amazing though, will be following along.

There is an extra inch diameter added to each counter sunk whole for the vortechs to allow air flow for the heat sinks to work properly. Here is a picture from the tank side. The MP60 Gives you a good reference to how large the aquarium is.
