LMAO! Aint that the truth! I stopped counting long ago so that i could sleep at night!
I stopped 12 or so years ago- now it is what it is, disposable income.

Anyone know how to get macro pics with a nikon d40??? Cant figure this out for the life of me!:o

Cant figure out how to get a decent closeup but here is a pic of a sunset montipora frag from Ding2dadong. This thing is INSANE nice green and orange. I got it from him i think about a week or 2 before the swap and it has already grown a decent amount!

Great looking tank.
In order to get macro shots with any dSLR you need either:
  • macro lens - most expensive but best option
  • zoom lens with a macro switch - multi-purpose
  • extension tube - cheaper solution, fits between camera body and existing lens
  • magnifying filter - cheapest solution, fits on end of existing lens

I love my 50mm macro lens, I can shove the lens hood right up against the glass and take great pics without having to whip out the tripod. Here's a link to a google search for extension tubes, I'm sure you can find one for your camera.

extension tube macro

Pedro, can you take a picture with the tube and then the same exact picture without the tube so we can se the difference?
yes please!!!!!!
Altough this things are $20 so well worth the little expense if they do work.

Do you know if we can get those extension tubes locally somewhere or do you have to order them on the net?

Depends on the camera. For me (Pentax) there's rarely anything local. But Canon and Nikon, you should find lots of stuff locally, even at places like Best Buy and Circuit City.

Anyway, I didn't have an extension tube, just read about them. I ordered one online, should have it in a few days. Maybe I'll do a test comparison: standard lens, standard lens with extension tube, macro lens. Maybe I'll try macro lens with extension tube and get a shot of the individual coral molecules. :D

Any idea on a ballpark range for a macro lens for a nikon d40?

Quick google search turned up macros from under $300 to over $1200. I like the 50mm because it allows me to focus on things really close to the glass.

No no no, try the cheapest solution first. If that doesn't cut it for you, you can always go for the low end macro for under $300.

Lol, good idea!

Even $300 though is a big chunk of change for just taking closeup pics of my corals! At least, thats what im sure the wife will say;)
