Just read this thread and thought I would pose this question.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=846361

So, just how much is too much for any Zoanthid, rare or not?

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", "one man's junk, is another man's treasure", "it's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it", " you only live once", "you can't take it with you". And my favorite, "there's one born everyday". So what cha talkin bout Mooch. I had a guy to offer me a some of money last week for 3 polyps, yes, all he wanted was 3. If I told you what he offered me, you would fall out of your chair and break a pinky toe. I just couldn't do it, ( no I'm not looking for a DAT AH BOY or a pat on the back). I just couldn't take THAT amount of money and I wasn't willing to part with something so hard to find.

Thus my question. If you found or saw a single cluster of 3 polyps that were unlike anything, I mean anything you have ever seen before, I mean the colors defy labeling, how much would you pay for 3 of those polyps? Or, how much is too much?

I can see the steam rising, so lets just hear your opinions without calling anyone a fool if they chose to pay X amount of money for a once in a lifetime gem.

PS, I'm not selling anything and I don't have any pics to post. Just asking a question.

I would like to say i wouldnt' pay more than most, and i would never pay 5 per polyp. I ran across some armegedons at a lfs, but they wanted 120 for 6-8 polyps, and i laughed. maybe if they weren't under two vho actinics and were half the price with twice the polyps i would have considered it. online is even worse as the zoas tend to not look the same once in the home tank.
my favorite lfs's dont jack up prices to ridiculous levels on zoas, but apparently there are not many zoa nuts in my area, as three colonies of blues sat for three weeks before i bought two of them; one is still there a month later.

I tend to believe most of the high prices are paid by new or wealthy hobbiests; as we get educated and experienced in this hobby we tend to make less mistakes and have fewer foolish purchases. Knowledge is power, but if someone wants to pay high prices, let them, hopefully something I have lots of will be selling for $$$, then i can flood the market and clean up while driving the price down.

I think it also depends on if it was wild caught or aquacultured; if i have had a colony for a long time (year+) i feel justified selling it for more. I had costs associated with the growth and raising of the zoas, and they are likely to be healthier and more forgiving of captive care

I'd pay $18.95, plus shipping of course.;)

There happens to be a seller in our forums that has some very nice zoanthids (protopalys to be exact), minimum order is $250.

Is that too much?

Value is different to each individual.

Ok, how about $1000/polyp? Is that too much? :)

Well, what if your soulmate was in the hospital with an incurable disease, and only had 3 weeks to live. She loves reefs and never got a chance to set up her zoa nanocube that's she's always always always wanted.

There's only 1 polyp of the most special zoa in the entire universe, and you can buy it for $1000. Would you buy it then? Just so you could give it to her? Probably, right? :)

Extreme example, but everyone has their own reason for what they would be willing to pay.

On one of the other boards I'm on, there is a member who is setting up what he says will be the last reef system he'll ever set up for the rest of his life. He's getting on in years and wants to be able to get everything up and running so that he can enjoy it before he's gone. He had asked everybody for coral suggestions for putting together his ultimate and final reef. Money wasn't the big factor there.

if someone offers you XXX amount of dollars, for 3 polyps. if they set their own price...so be it. but i do know what you mean mucho, about not wanting to take that much $$. i have the same conflicting ethics sometimes.

in all honestly, i could care less how much people want to pay for whatever they want. zoas/sps/lps whatever. its their money, their tanks, etc etc. thats why i like ebay so much, the buyers say how much they are willing to pay, and thats what they are worth to that one buyer, not necessarily a min price for all certain kinds of zoas (or other corals). the worth of a coral isnt set by LFS / interent rarity standards. (even though i know you can set a min price on ebay).

in the end, if its me...(and many of us out there), how much you are willing to spend somewhat depends on what spousal privaleges we can sustain to lose for X# of weeks. or if we are banned to sleep on the couch. if i get "the look" while i'm in the LFS...i know its time to pack up and head out

Amen Brother!
Again, why do single men live longer?

Because they want to!

Why, do you envy this person? ;)
i just like to collect pics for future drooling purposes :D

If its a never before seen morph and also gets beer from the fridge for me without complaining.......Max i'd spend on any coral is $127 (cuz i already did once)

I doubt I would buy it to begin with. Eventually that polyp will make its way to reefers who WONT sell it, but only trade it. At that point I will offer anything I have that he wants for it.
The most I will pay per polyp is 20$. That was for True PPE... And they ended up dying ( My fault :( ) and I wont pay that again...
There are people who realize these things grow like weeds in the ocean and sell them for what their worth, not what the can get for them. Even the "rare" ones were pulled out of the ocean in a large colony, and they are out there somewhere...and they will surface sometime.. I can wait.. my tank isnt going to miss that super rare polyp, and neither will I.

I will just stare at Muchos Pics!

It sounds to me like you boys need to find chickas in the hobby. Then you'd have great tanks AND great...relations. :)

The amount of money I spend on zoas is dependant upon how much I love the morph, and rarity plays in there. It isn't that I have any intention of getting rich off of fragging a good investment, but I like that it increases my trading power. That way, other serious collectors get to appreciate the 'pimp' (to borrow a ReefJunkie term) zoas, and I get to expand my collection.

Aint that the truth. :D

For those who know me or have read my post in the past, then you know my stance on these issues. For zoa's if it's much more than a buck a poylop, you can keep it. on the other hand, I'd much rather do a 1 for 1 trade.

I think all of these fad corals are rediculas in their prices, expcially after you see what the wholesalers are selling them for. I've got some of the named zoa's that sell for a bit of money per poylop yet I paid less for a whole coloney from a LFS or traded for them than what people are now paying for a few poylops since someone put a name on them.

Hey Matt,

Check these out :D

http://www.thecoraloasis.com/limited/limiteddesertfox.htm

http://www.zoaid.com/index.php?module=pnGallery2&func=main&g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=321

those are the ones i want!! i've had my eye on those for more than a year. i would call those much more rare than PPE's. i'm not gonna pay $$ for them though, nor PPE's. i will just make the person i trade with VERY VERY happy!! ive seen them go up on ebay a couple of times also, soooooooo tempted. i really should pay $20/polyp now, before they become $100/polyp after we talk about them and show them to all the newbies out there with alot of cash to blow.

lets keep these on the down low though. we dont want them to become super rare sought after and become more expensive than PPE

LOL, I've got some "Desert Foxes" too. And to think I'm letting Ecotoxlady, drunk, near my tank with a scapel on Friday night. Let the auctions begin!
