I just bought my first crocea after great success thus far with a squamosa(sp). However, upon arrival back home and under much better lighting he doesnt look so hot. He is kind of opaque in the center. Please advise.

that's pretty normal, i wouldnt worry. some clams look almost transparent in the center of there mantles.

to me from the pic it look fine

FWIW, croceas need to be placed on hard substrate (rock work ) for long term sucess.

Other than that, it looks fine.

Well, its just there habit. They are known as Boring clams. In nature they are always found bored into the heads of coral. Often Porites.

They also have the largest byssul hole in the bottom of the clam, which opens them up to preditation when placed on a soft substrate.

You could place it on the glass, but it will attach and be hard to move.

Your best bet is a half shell or other rock that it sits on well.

Well, today its mantle is retracted even more. I dont understad...my squamosa is loving life and the other crocea I bought is looking fantastic.

Clam is dead and the cleaners are munching on it. I feel like I have a bone to pick with the LFS. 48 hours and its gone. My others clams are super happy, whats up with that?

sorry to hear that. sometimes it hard to tell the health of a clam. they can look fine but really be close to death

I should have known better....the LFS I bought it from is one that I very rarely visit or purchase things from, just for this reason. I feel like I dooped myself and was dooped by the LFS owner. I feel bad for the clam and basically 40 bucks down the drain and a new cool shell.

Can they survive under 260w PC lighting......?

I am basically trying to find out which clams I can keep for certain, which a maybe and which I cannot under no circumstances keep under 260w of PC lighting

I like this Crocea in the picture above. ;)

what I noticed in your pic was the clam was gaping, atleast the start of gaping. The inlet was wide open. They do that 1 day then usually the next its a retracted mantle then boom gone.
The thing could have been in a hot tank at the dealer or yours, I know clams hate heat and its a possibility this time of year?

Based on what I've been told and read the Squamosa and the Derasa are lower light clams but will not thrive long under PC lighting.

One LFS owner said 6 months max ... YMMV

here is the other Crocea that i got. How does it look? It looks ok to me but i am pretty new to clams.
