1st derasa , what tips do i need?

Be careful of sudden SG changes as derasas are particularly sensitive to changes. They are, however, still considered fairly hardy as are most of the other giant clams given a suitable environment.

Another rule of thumb is to place a clam where the current doesn't ruffle its mantle too much (occasionally is ok..).

Just a couple of quick tips for successful clamming. :)

when a shodow falls on the clam is reacts immediatly by retracting its mantle and closing its siphons, but it does not close.

should the shell shut when a shadow falls on it?

i have about a 5inch dersa nice color golden with green tigerstripes under 65 wt pc, but its in a 33 long i think its 10 inches deep i feed dt once a week and have had him for over a year. dont realy recomend it but in a balanced tank its pocible. good luck with your indevor

From Daniel Knop's Giant Clams, clams eat phytoplancton when they're young and not much of anything once they reach 3-5 inches. The sneezing is probably the clams way of flushing out material that is much too big for it to eat.

okay the only thing is this clam MOVES ... i have REALLY little sand, close to none on the side of where the clam stays and it seems to keep moving.. now its near this rock where it seems to have hindered itself from expanding to the max, yet the mantle extension is out like 1-1 1/2 inches out..

any ideas how to keep clams w/ a BAREBOTTOM?

im thinking of getting a squamosa?? is that good? or will a maxima be better?
thanks..

the derasa fairly gallops around the tank compared to the squamosas and crocea; the crocea stays put and will burrow into rock; the squamosas find a suitable spot stay put, ime.

i'd gently nudge the derasa to a spot where it can fully open. no opinion on squamosa vs. maxima, beyond a belief that there is no clam that can really fare well in poorer conditions than any other clam- they all need/do better in great light & water conditions.

i see
.. im thinking bout a squamosa.. anybody got links to pics like how big they grow.. all i have is a 90 and the derassa is on the right.. wanna get a squamost on left.

I have a suggestion...
i picked up a small derasa last week that seems to be very healthy. The only problem I have is that my queen conch knocks it over all the time.

I recommend not buying a queen conch if you have unanchored clams in the sand bed.

if your clam keeps moving try letting its byssul gland attaching to something see if he stays still then mine attached to rock never mooved

hoenslty i feel my clam is growing.. i want to try a diff't type fo clam.. which clam should i get? im thinkin either a squamosa or a maxima..

thanks.. any ideas? or info?
