Update:

Got all my stuff in from BRS. I ordered a new ballast for the T5's and I threw away the old one with its wires. The new ballast didn't come with wires so I ordered new wires. Should come in by Thursday.

Got the rock and sand all in. I might change the aqua scapping a little. IDK yet. I'll take some better pictures when the water clears up.

What temp and salinity range do y'all keep your FOWLR tanks at? I keep my reef tank between 78.0 to 78.5F and around 1.025-.026 for salinity.

Got the new wires in and writes the new ballast.

coral experiment

I've placed a few corals from my reef tank into the FOWLR tank to see what corals I can keep with the Butterfly fishes. Here is a list of corals that are in the FOWLR tank: ( As of now I only have 2 pearl scale butterfly fish and a Flame angel)

Zoas
-20 different Zoas
-some no names
- Blondies
- Scramble eggs
- Purple people eaters
- Gold hornets
- Green Bay Packers
- Kedds Reds

Anemone
- Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone (7-10 inches)

Most of the corals have been in the tank for at least a month.
The BTA has been in the tank since day one.
Flame angel has been in the tank since Aug 19th.
Pair of Pearlscale Butterfly fish since Aug 25th.

So far,
The Flame has nipped at the Green finger leather coral and the JF radio Active Stylophora. He or she... has left the zoas alone.

The Pearlscales have been picking at the large chalice. The chalice was stung by the branching hammer mother colony in the reef tank and the Pearlscales are picking on the side that was dyeing off.

The chaetodon punctatofasciatus did nip at the big chalice and the red monti.

I haven't seen the Chaetodon Collare eat yet. I've tried frozen PE mysis, brine shrimp, fish frenzy, half shell clams. The pellets I tried were hikari extreme seed weed, Hikari freeze-dried brine, NLS marine fish formula, and ON formula 1 pellets

Also tried a rock with aptasia on it. The chaetodon punctatofasciatus went to town on the aptasia.

looks great!
I keep mine at 80 deg and 1.023.
like others said, qt is key! a lot of angels and butterfly fish coming in with parasites and flukes.

The Chaetodon Collare didn't make it. :sad2:

I've noticed the Chaetodon Punctatofasciatus has taken a liking to the taste of the purple and orange leptastrea. I'm going to pull it out tomorrow and put it back in the reef tank.

I put the purple and orange leptastrea and both chalices back into the reef tank. So far all the other corals are doing good.... new fish coming soon... girlfriend bought a fish and its still in QT. Picking him up some time next week!

Well..... I had someone QT a Moorish Idol for a week. After I got him, he was eating off the algae clip on day 2. I was soooo happy. When I woke up on day 3 he had ich all over him. He died on day 4 and all the butterflies, my clown fish that I had since he was extremely small and the flame angel followed suit. :headwally: I really got attached to the pair of Chaetodon Xanthurus. So devastating!! I went out and got a 33g tank that I'm setting up as a QT tank.

sorry to hear :(
IMHO one week qt is not enough time for a proper quarantine procedure. The average recommended time is min 4 weeks depending on what type of qt you are doing.
qt the remaining fish and keep the DT fishless for a min 72 days and then enjoy adding healthy fish back to your dt after you qt :)

Guess I will after the qt tank cycles. 72 days is a long time[emoji26]! I've been researching QT tanks and it seems that it take about 4-8 weeks to properly treat a fish.

what you can do is take a couple of live rocks out of your display and place them in the qt and that will give it a kick start and allow for instant if not a rapid cycle for the qt.
yeah 72 days is a minimum to make sure that all the ich and most all other parasites are eradicated from the display (except uronema which is a nightmare to deal with). make sure there is no cross contamination from your qt to the display tank and that the qt is at least 10 feet away if not in another room to prevent cross contamination.
